Publisher's Summary

The Supreme rules the world.

For centuries, the Supreme has reigned with an iron fist. The people are slaves to her whim and at the mercy of her followers who revere her as their goddess. Using a supernatural ability, known as the "Power", she is able to channel emotions and convert them into superhuman abilities.

Some resist. Not all live their lives in servitude. A few rare people also possess the power and try to fight. These empowered ones are hunted mercilessly by the supreme and her servants, for she knows the threat they pose to her will. None has dared to challenge her outright.

That is until now. Elian, a young boy living at the edge of the Imperium discovers he, too, possesses the power with devastating consequences for both himself and the girl he loves. On the run, they encounter a ragtag band of resistance fighters called the Liberators. Among their ranks are others with the gift and their leader Vavius, who believes that the key to overthrowing the Supreme lies in the ruins of the ravaged lands of the once mighty Kingdom of Aeranyth. Pursued and hunted for their gifts by the sinister First Fear and the Hollowed, the world's fate rests in the hands of the Empowered Ones.

Overall, enjoyable

Let's start with the narrator. I like his voice well enough, though I do think he should pause more often. flowing straight onto the next line without leaving time to sink in loses some of the impact at times. Though this may be a problem with the editing. Its usually just a funny moment when a line repeats itself because the editor forgot to delete one of the takes, but it happens kind of alot in this. Not really a problem, just strange.

The only other thing to note about the narrator is his range, or lack thereof. The narrator not being able to change their voice much for each character is the kind of thing that's only a problem if you notice it. And to be fair, I didn't notice it for a long time. So far as I can tell, the writer does a good job of making it clear who is speaking, so I was never confused. So again, not really a problem, just strange.

If I had to guess, those thing are probably why the sequel has a different narrator.

Now the writer. Like I said above, the writer does a good job of making it clear what's happening and who is speaking. I liked the characters, enjoyed the story, and the plot twist at the end was sufficiently twisty. My main complaint is that it's too short.

I know that is a compliment in a way, and I do want more of the story. I will likely be getting the sequel. But I also mean that he maybe should have taken some more time to flesh out certain events. It never felt rushed per se, just like more should have been happening I suppose.

Despite, those complaints, I did enjoy the book. I am mostly knit picking here. I feel as though I got my money's worth, and I suppose that's all you can hope for.

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
