Story
Captain Ben Stiger captured Castle Vrell and rid it of a minion of a dark god. Now he finds himself cut off from the empire, with a hostile rebel army marching on the legion's fortress where they guard the entrance to Vrell Valley. It is not in Stiger's nature to simply wait for the enemy. Badly outnumbered and facing odds greater than 20 to one, he sets out to impede the enemy's advance and show them the steel that the legions are made of.
Publisher's Summary
Best-selling, award-winning author of Stiger's Tigers Marc Alan Edelheit delivers the third action-packed book in his fantasy epic, the Karus Saga. One of history’s greatest mysteries, the disappearance of ancient Rome’s Ninth Imperial Legion, is now revealed in this untold story.
Having been transported to the world of Tanis, separated from everything they know, the Ninth find themselves caught amid an ancient war of the gods. Like a dark tide, the Horde is slowly conquering one nation after another, and a great migration of peoples has begun fleeing westward before the enemy’s advancing armies. No one has been able to stand against the might of the Horde. But the Horde has never faced the power of a Roman legion.
Cast adrift in this strange, fantastical world, so unlike the one he knew, Karus has been given a number of tasks by his God Jupiter, known in this world as the High Father. Karus’ holy mission and mandate: retrieve a dread artifact and form an alliance with the peoples of this world so together they can withstand the might of the enemy and finally escape Tanis before it is too late. If he succeeds, the reward is everything Romulus and Remus were promised. If he fails, all will be lost and the Ninth destroyed.
Aided by the dragons Cyln’Phax and Kordem and the dwarven warchief Shoega, Karus and Amarra have succeeded in the first task, retrieving the dread sword Rarokan. It is a weapon that is both powerful and incredibly dangerous, for it has a mind of its own and an evil agenda.
Returning from the Fortress of Radiance, Karus must now find a way to save Shoega’s besieged warband, cure the sickness ravaging his legion, and then defeat an enemy army that outnumbers his legion greatly before he can even begin to think about unifying the free peoples of Tanis, who dislike and despise one another.
If you enjoy an original story, honorable heroes, mind-blowing twists, and pause-resisting action that puts you right in the middle of gritty battles, then you will love the Karus Saga.

This series continues to impress!
The story arc continues to unfold and some questions answered. As always, the story flowed smoothly being told from one POV. (Something which I greatly appreciate as a reader.) The action was well written and the main characters decisions all logical and intelligent. Karus also remains heroic and very likable! The only downside was that I finished the book much too quickly.

Fantastic
This book sucks you into the drama surrounding a group of Roman Legionaries who find themselves on a strange world and having to fight to survive. They have much to learn and overcome as they try to understand how and why they are there and what is expected of them and how they perform if they are not to perish. The interaction of the commander with those he comes across is outstanding. As are the tactics he uses to overcome an insurmountable disadvantage in being attacked by an overwhelming army.
The narrator does a fantastic job with the many characters as well as expressing emotion.
This is book three in a series and now I am stamping my feet and pacing while waiting for the next book.

Don't let the cover art, put you off.
Of the three books so far, this is superb. Definitely don't let what I think is 80s children style cover art, put you off this fantastic novel.
Plot and narrative well paced, with further characters and their development introduced.
What I liked were the plot twists, the military aspects weaved into the story, the various cliff hanging events and general pace towards an excellent ending, for the next performance.
