Story
Like many doctors and nutrition experts, bestselling author Dr. Steven Gundry has long endorsed the ketogenic diet—a style of eating that heavily restricts carbohydrate intake to make the body burn fat for fuel. Because ketosis offers a variety of health benefits, including weight loss, reduced risk of illness, and enhanced energy, Dr. Gundry believed his patients’ efforts to adhere to the challenging regimen was worthwhile. That is, until his research uncovered a shocking truth: We’ve gotten keto all wrong.

How is it that a baboon, a cat and a locust instinctively know what to eat for balanced nutrition, and we humans can't seem to figure it out? David Raubenheimer and Stephen J. Simpson have been studying appetite in animals, transforming the science of nutrition with their findings. In Eat Like the Animals, they take us on a journey from jungle to laboratory and back to our own kitchens to understand how and why we eat, how appetites are fed and regulated, and how, in the end, it all comes down to protein.

We've all heard the recommendation: no more than a teaspoon of salt a day for a healthy heart. But there's one big problem with this: the majority of us don't need to watch our salt. For most, salt protects against a host of aliments, including internal starvation, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease - not to mention, it tastes great.

Eat less, lose more: a mantra few of us would disagree with and one we’ve heard countless times in official health advice. And yet doctors treating diabetes and obesity are experiencing extraordinary results among patients by taking a different approach - not by counting calories, but by eating a low-carb, high-fat diet. Setting out the case for this ‘ketogenic’ approach to eating, Gary Taubes analyses the bad science behind the nutritional dogma that has brought us to a diabetes and obesity crisis.

Story
Calorie information is ubiquitous. We see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume everywhere. Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about. All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today, are wrong. Dr Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight.

Publisher's Summary
If you've ever struggled with losing weight and keeping it off, I don't have to tell you it's a challenge. You already know.
What if losing weight could be as easy as flipping a switch? I know that sounds incredible. But now there's an abundance of research telling us that may be possible. In his new book, The Fat Switch, Dr. Richard J. Johnson, presents news-breaking, science-based studies that will reverse current thinking on both the cause and treatment of obesity.
And by looking at why people gain excessive weight, Dr. Johnson has discovered why obesity is so hard to treat, and why so many people lose weight only to rapidly regain it. Based on his breakthrough research, Dr Johnson provides a detailed plan on how to prevent weight gain and to lose weight. He also lays out how this research will soon result in treatments to end obesity, something that has been the Holy Grail for those suffering from being overweight.
In a nutshell, this is what he's uncovered from decades of research: Those of us who are obese eat more because of a faulty "switch" and exercise less because of a low energy state. If you can learn how to control the specific "switch" located in the powerhouse of each of your cells, the mitochondria, you hold the key to fighting obesity. So, if you've noticed you have less energy, tire more easily with exercise, or struggle to burn fat, take heart. We now know the reason why. And in just a few short moments, so will you.

Want to understand weight gain?
Where does The Fat Switch rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
By far the best I have listened to thus far - though I just started listening... I will say it is the best book to start your weight control education - I strongly suggest this book as the first book to listen to/read, before you decide on which diet program/plan you start.
What other book might you compare The Fat Switch to and why?
Keto Clarity, Fat Chance, Sweet Poison, Lowe Carbohydrate Living, Ketone Power, Lipid Biochemistry to name a few... Whitewash is another EXCELLENT resource. (just wish it was in Audio.)
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
The truth to weight gain, and how to review your eating habits, in order to get control of it.
Any additional comments?
I wish I would have listened to this book before I spent money on others - it would have saved me a lot of time and money by focusing my education. I have read several books regarding how to best lose weight and why their way was the best way. Of course I was seeing results with their plans, but I found myself limiting my food choices to a very small set, and left me wondering why I had to limit myself. I started looking at various textbook, including biochemistry and quantum chemistry, to discover why foods caused my body to react a certain way, and what options I had to tweak my food intake to increase my selections, without detrimentally impacting my goals.

Too much history and facts about animals
Chapter after chapter on a variety of obscure animals and how they store fat before they tell you the "switch" which sounds still to be some level of theory. Not a lot of how to...I skipped through the majority of the book and will likely return it because it was just that bad.

Before its time
What made the experience of listening to The Fat Switch the most enjoyable?
The revelation and relevance of fructose as the sugar that turns on the fat switch and how our modern food supply is preparing us for hibernation rather than sustaining us for ideal health.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Fructose is the bad guy, Just wait. It won't be long and everyone will be talking about good sugars and bad sugars in the same way as good and bad fats are becoming familiar to us now.
Have you listened to any of Brian Holsopple’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He struggles with some of the biochemical terms but it's no big deal.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It is a work of non-fiction and as such, was an eye-opener in so far as the new insights and discoveries presented and how they extend the field of nutritional science into new areas of knowledge.
Any additional comments?
The major omission is the relevance of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories which moderate insulin and leptin resistance, ameliorate metaflammation and have a significant influence on nutrition as well as improving the success of low carb, high protein dieting regimes.

Not a diet book; rather a history of sugar
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the depth of detail the author has on the subject of sugar and how it can seriously destroy a society. Loved all the detail of animals as well
Would you be willing to try another book from Richard J. Johnson MD? Why or why not?
My first by this author
Which character – as performed by Brian Holsopple – was your favorite?
I thought the reader was excellent
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The entire book was moving
Any additional comments?

Sleep inducing
Would you try another book written by Richard J. Johnson MD or narrated by Brian Holsopple?
I would probably try another by Richard Johnson. My problem was the narrator. I have no idea what the problem is, but probably because he is so monotonous, I find it extremely difficult to keep listening to the book without falling asleep. I am interested in the topic. I have read a good few books in the area, but just the ways in which he reads seems to be so devoid of engagement in the topic.
If he was reading a mystery or gripping fiction, it would have been different, but this book needs a little more engaging narrator.

Basically a load of boring mambo jumbo which I gained nothing from .....
completely depressing and just seemed to give the same old message of reducing sugar cutting carbs and that they may develop medication to block the fat switch in the future ..... which quite frankly I wouldn't want .
