Editorial reviews

Adults will be most appreciative of Jim May's stories of his growing up in the rural Midwest. The stories are a little low-key, and May's telling lacks some of the vivacity that holds listeners of all ages. These aren't knee-slapping whoppers but mostly wry stories of friends and family. May speaks clearly and tells the stories at a lazy afternoon pace. Some listeners will delight in both the restrained style and homespun content.

Publisher's Summary

Jim May grew up in the 1950's, among farm people who had lived along Illinois's Nippersink Creek for generations. Stories told around the kitchen tables, front porches, and horse-trading barns brought laughs, inspired love, and helped ease the sometimes tragic turn of life's events. Speaking in the familiar voice of a longtime neighbor, May shares humorous and affecting events, as well as his Chicago Emmy Award winning tribute to his father, "A Bell for Shorty".
