About this listen

It is still the War of 1812 and Jack Aubrey - with his tetchy, sardonic friend Stephen Maturin - has set course across the South Atlantic to intercept a powerful American frigate outward bound to play havoc with the British whaling trade. If they do not come up with her before she rounds the Horn, they must follow her into the Great South Sea and as far across the Pacific as she may lead them.

But Aubrey has to cope with a succession of disasters - men overboard, castaways, encounters with savages, storms, typhoons, groundings, shipwrecks, to say nothing of murder and criminal insanity.

Another great book in the Aubrey-Maturin series, with strong, detailed writing from O'Brian. Unfortunately, the only thing that let's this audiobook down is the editing/cutting as there were numerous occasions where lines were repeated. Not so bad as to detract overall, just a minor inconvenience.

O'Brian does it again.

A great story - a series focused upon Aubrey & Maturin exploits during Britain's time as the preeminent global seapower. Infused with broader gestures to society, international relations & of the shadowy world of intelligence gathering. Blazing cannons, cracking humour, hints of seagoing fare & fantastic characters make this a must listen series.

Timeless, maritime literature.

Absolutely loved this instalment, even though parts of it strained my suspension of disbelief..!

Life aboard ship when things get tough, monotonous, and dangerous never gets old, and if you’re a fan of Maturin’s capers and utter inability to remain in one piece throughout a voyage, you won’t be able to put this down!

I am also enjoying the way POB’s novels are flowing into one another rather than seeming as stand-alone tales. But one thing is always certain: never doubt the dear Surprise!

Slice of life on the dear Surprise
