Story
My hand trembles as I stare at the anonymous text. On this sunny Saturday morning, our twin ten-year-old boys were playing in the park just down our tree-lined street. But only one of them has come home… and it’s all my husband’s fault. I race to Leo’s study and demand answers. As his face turns white, I know: one of his affairs has turned deadly. I always smell the unfamiliar perfume on his shirt. I try to pretend we are a happy family, for the sake of the children… but now, my child is in terrible danger.

Story
Katelyn smiles around at her husband and friends, gathered to celebrate her 36th birthday in their beautiful home decorated with fairy lights. But the next day Katelyn wakes up shaken and terrified in a hospital bed. She doesn’t remember the sweet taste of birthday cake icing, or how angry her best friend was at midnight, or the terrible things her husband said. She doesn’t remember the party at all. When she asks her husband what happened the night of the party he says "nothing". But her blood runs cold at the way his voice lilts slightly. The way it always does when he is lying.

At the way she admires her three boys, the center of her universe. But if you looked very closely, you’d see how tightly she holds Jack’s hand, afraid to let go. Story
I never thought I would end up here. Alone, in a cold one-bedroom apartment, only seeing my precious daughter once a week. Another woman is living the life that was once mine. I wish I was still married to my ex-husband, the love of my life. I dream of tucking my five-year-old child into her ballerina bed sheets every night. I miss living in a beautiful house, the perfect family home, with a winding staircase and a sprawling garden. I’d do anything to be with my family again. To start over and prove to them that I’ve changed, that I won’t lose control like before.

Story
I could tell when my son started hiding things from me. He used to walk to school with a mischievous grin on his beautiful face. Now he avoids eye contact and keeps his head down. Since I discovered he’s being bullied by a classmate, I’ve spent every day worrying, my stomach churning with anxiety from the moment he leaves the house to the second he walks back through the door. Everyone keeps telling me I’m overreacting, but I won’t risk my child’s safety. My husband and I try to talk to the other boy’s parents, but it only makes things worse. Then our precious child is hurt. Enough is enough.

Story
You tell him everything. The husband you adore, the father of your child, your best friend. He knows, just by looking at your sage green eyes, when something is wrong. The two of you can communicate with a glance or a touch of the hand. Except what if you can’t? What if your happy marriage has plastered over one huge lie? A lie you have even started to believe yourself in order to survive?
Publisher's Summary
In a normal family, in a normal house, on a normal street, everything is about to go horribly wrong....
You’d never know what secrets the house on Hogarth Street holds - what’s happening, right this second, behind closed doors.
An emerald-green front lawn. Perfectly trimmed hedging. An ivy-covered front gate and the scent of honeysuckle in the air. In the yard, two scooters lie on the grass. One blue, one pink, belonging to five-year-old twins.
But if you look closely, you’ll see the windows closed on the hottest day of the year.
If you listen carefully, you’ll hear the sound of a mother reassuring her precious children, the son and daughter she’d do anything for, as she holds their little hands. It’s okay, Mama’s here.
If you manage to get past the locked doors, you’d find her blaming herself. For the mistakes she has made. The choices that have to led to this moment. Her regrets about trusting the wrong people.
Inside the beautiful house on a quiet street is a mother making a desperate decision. Because somebody is threatening the life she has built and the children she worships. It’s down to her to protect her family. How far she is willing to go?

Was waiting for this one to be over
I didn’t find the twists anywhere near exciting. I also struggled a lot with reading a book nearly entirely about two people deciding whether or not to phone police despite multiple unhinged signals something was off.

Good story but terrible characters
I enjoyed the story and plot , but the characters were so stupid with sone of the things the author had them say , surely they would not be that stupid in real life, also sone of the conversations had during the book were meaningless drivel that had no value in the story , the speech of Debbie made you want to stab yourself in the eye , nobody sounds like that I wanted to yell every time the narrator spoke . But if you can get past that the story isn’t too bad for anAustralian author

A ‘nice’ easy listen
I wouldn’t say it’s captivating or action-packed but still a good story. It’s worth listening to if you like that feel-good ending that we all hope for. A little predictable, but most stories seem to be.

Australian suburbia on show
This was a well-written book with a twist, taut and building in tension. The narration was outstanding. Warning: this book contains descriptions of domestic violence which may be extremely upsetting for some people.
