Publisher's Summary

THE BOOK THAT BROUGHT DOWN RUPERT MURDOCH

Meet the Murdochs and the disastrously dysfunctional family of Fox News. Until recently, they formed the most powerful media and political force in America. Now their empire is cracking up and crashing down.

In his irresistible trilogy on the chaotic Trump presidency - Fire and Fury, Siege, and Landslide - the journalist Michael Wolff led readers deep into the twisted corridors of the White House. Drawing on years of unprecedented access to the Murdoch family and key players, he plunges us behind the scenes of another empire of influence, and the result is astonishing and unforgettable.

Here is Rupert Murdoch, the ninety-two-year-old billionaire - concerned about his legacy, but more concerned about profits. Here are his contentious children, jockeying to take over when the old man is gone. Here is star anchor Tucker Carlson considering a run for the presidency while his bosses have other plans for him. Sean Hannity, the richest man in television, has his own plans: to put Trump back in office. While presenter Laura Ingraham is just trying to survive in a man's world.

As the fallout from the 2020 election and the Dominion lawsuit pummels the reputation of the network, the battling Murdoch heirs position themselves for the final act in this riveting drama.

An OK listen, but nothing new

If you don’t know anything about the Murdochs then this may be a gripping listen, but most of the book covers well-trodden ground. Much of the narrative seems to be speculative conjecture presented as “fly on the wall” verbatim. An OK listen but nothing to write home about.

Rambling

Tiring to listen to. A meandering bore. Why use one adjective when you can use ten. The writer has been watching Fox for too long.

Confusing and Not Factual

This story jumps around because each chapter is based on a character in the story. So each chapter goes backwards and forwards. This is confusing. I wish I had not selected this book because it is more of a gossip than a factual history.

Disappointing

I was looking forward to this as an admirer of the author’s work. Unlike the previous book, there is no direct access to the protagonists. Seems there is more a stream of consciousness about what they are thinking and saying. Don’t get entire sections given to Carlson and Hannity - not what they are thinking. doing and saying based on evidence attributed to direct sources - but the author attributes to them unsupported interpretations. Same applies to the children (Elizabeth ‘blond’ and ‘skittish’?!) Murdoch himself and his more recent wives. This doesn’t read like cold, factual analysis of evidence which the author delivered in previous works.

Best for readers who didn't follow this

every day in the microscopic detail so many of us did. Although, even for those of us who did, it's a very useful reminder of events.

I like Woolf's books though and there is something delicious in the fact that appealing so strongly to Trump's twisted followers (and those who want to advertise to them!) turned out to be a poison chalice for Murdoch. Karma's a b1tch!

Amazing insight

Incredible insight from Wolff as usual but the narrator’s Murdoch impressions were poor as was the production with regular “clicks” from either poor recording or editing. Shame as the content was illuminating.
