Story
In German East Africa on the eve of the First World War, two freebooting adventurers - one a flamboyant Irish American, the other an impeccable young Englishman - pit their wits against the gross German Commissioner from whose territory they are making their living as game hunters and ivory poachers. But the outbreak of war gives the signal for their private skirmishing to flare into a relentless vendetta pursued with devastating violence by land and sea, so that what begins as a comic escapade gives way to chilling horror....

The Syrian plane disintegrated, evaporating in a gush of silvery smoke, rent through with bright white lightning, and the ejecting pilot's body was blown clear of the fuselage. For an instant it was outlined ahead of David's screen, cruciform in shape with arms and legs thrown wide, the helmet still on the head, and the clothing ballooning in the rush of air.

Publisher's Summary
From best-selling novelist Wilbur Smith, The Eye of the Tiger is an exciting adventure set amongst the peaceful islands of the Indian Ocean, where a man's past returns to hunt him down.
'I was looking down, watching the shark come. It seemed to swell up in size as it rushed towards me. Every detail was burned into my mind in those frantic seconds. I saw the hog's snout with the two slotted nostrils, the golden eyes with the black pupils like arrowheads, the broad blue back from which stood the tall executioner's blade of the dorsal fin.'
Harry Fletcher, a man with a chequered past, has reformed and is making an honest living as a charter skipper fishing for big game in the seductive waters of the Indian Ocean. Suddenly men from the world of violence Harry has put behind him overturn his good intentions, involving him in a hectic race to recover a fabulous treasure from an ancient wreck.

Stand alone story from a master
This book is not part of a series and shines because of that. When it was released as a book in the 1970s, book series were not that common so writers had to stretch their imagination for each book they wrote. This one, together with Hungry as the Sea are the very best Wilbur Smith has written. They stand on their own merits as cracking good adventure stories, and the boat named "Wave Dancer" has become a legend for boat names over the years, A great listen from first to last page.

Very good book with a diving focus
Although there is plenty of action combined with vivid descriptions of Africa, Wilbur Smith explores realms outside of his comfort zone. This book focuses on diving around the islands off-shore from northern Mozambique. Although it took a little work to get going, I ended up enjoying the book a lot.

This stand-alone novel is like a Graham Greene novel suspended in a contemporary action thriller. Wilbur Smith is a phenomenally adept chronicler of the British Colonial and post-colonial experience. Buy everything he has written...I have and don’t regret my investments.

Best Wilbur Smith Ever?
Whatever a great audible book contains this one has it. Ben Onwukwe 's narration is superb, his character creation in voice was as good as it gets. The story is or could be Wilbur Smith's best. Albeit written several years ago, the story is timeless, the setting simteless, the plot timeless. I've listened to most every book Wilbur Smith has created in audio form and this one could be the best ever!

Not my favorite, but certainly worthwhile
My previous Wilbur Smith novels were the Courtney sagas so I was somewhat taken aback by the first person perspective. But it seems Robert Smith can write a mesmerizing adventure novel employing just about any delivery.. The ending was not totally unexpected - though satisfying enough - and rather than a banal “good guy won and got the girl too” rather in keeping with the lone rough hewn protagonist. A good, quick and entertaining listen.

Terrific adventure ruined by a poor reader
Was all set to relive one of my favourite Wilbur Smith stories on Audible, but found this almost impossible to listen to because of the performer's truly awful delivery. it was as if he was reading the whole thing at first sight, ponderous pacing, poor characterisation but worst of all were the regular strange pauses in the middle of sentences or phrases. persisted only because my wife has not read the story but had to take frequent breaks to calm down over the way he was ruining it.
