Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award.

Meet Jimmy Flick. He's not like other kids - he's both too fast and too slow. Jimmy's mother, Paula, is the only one who can manage him. She teaches him how to count sheep so that he can fall asleep. She holds him tight enough to stop his cells spinning. It is only Paula who can keep Jimmy out of his father's way. But when Jimmy's world falls apart, he has to navigate life on his own and make things right.

Critic Reviews

"Laguna creates a world and a character and a language that we become immersed within.... This is humane, passionate, true." (Christos Tsiolkas)

Great read for young adult and adult audience.

Poignant and thoughtful story, with a realistic portrayal of this family s struggle. Most impressive was the insight into the way an autistic boy sees the world. Definitely worth reading. Sue

The Eye of the Sheep

This was a book chosen by my book club and not one I had ever considered reading.
When I began to listen I was a little taken aback as to how Australian (the accent and cadences) it was - I wasn't expecting it :) However as I became absorbed in the story I couldn't imagine it read any other way - in fact I don't think others who read the text enjoyed the story as much as the few of us who listened to it.

I really appreciated the story as well, even though it was tragic.
How to write from the perspective of the mind of a child with autism?? Sofie's telling of story through the voice of Jimmy was brilliant.

Great Australian story

Loved this book as told through the eyes of an autistic child. About domestic violence, alcoholism, Australian families and a mothers love. The narrator is very talented and made listening to this book even more enriching. A worthwhile "read"

Master performance by Nikos Andronicos

This story told through the eyes of a child with an autism spectrum disorder highlighted both the love and determination of ordinary people to live life even through struggles and hardship. It didn't skip over failures or hurts and was narrated brilliantly by Nikos Andronicos!

Brilliant

At first I found Jimmy to be really annoying...but as the book went on ... a deeper understanding of this beautiful troubled little boy overtook you. Terrific writing.

superb

We have book clubbed this book & scored 10/10. Sofie Laguna has skilfully crafted a potentially bleak subject with humour and insight. Brilliant!

Brilliantly read

Best narrated book I have listened to. Story loses a bit in the second half but still really good.
