About this listen

Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award.

Meet Jimmy Flick. He's not like other kids - he's both too fast and too slow. Jimmy's mother, Paula, is the only one who can manage him. She teaches him how to count sheep so that he can fall asleep. She holds him tight enough to stop his cells spinning. It is only Paula who can keep Jimmy out of his father's way. But when Jimmy's world falls apart, he has to navigate life on his own and make things right.

"Laguna creates a world and a character and a language that we become immersed within.... This is humane, passionate, true." (Christos Tsiolkas)

Loved this book as told through the eyes of an autistic child. About domestic violence, alcoholism, Australian families and a mothers love. The narrator is very talented and made listening to this book even more enriching. A worthwhile "read"

Poignant and thoughtful story, with a realistic portrayal of this family s struggle. Most impressive was the insight into the way an autistic boy sees the world. Definitely worth reading. Sue

Great read for young adult and adult audience.

It takes a while to get used to the narration because it’s the voice of a child, but the narrator is brilliant and brings the story to life.
This is a heart-breaking story of a child. I was so relieved that there was hope in the end. Highly recommend!

This story told through the eyes of a child with an autism spectrum disorder highlighted both the love and determination of ordinary people to live life even through struggles and hardship. It didn't skip over failures or hurts and was narrated brilliantly by Nikos Andronicos!

Master performance by Nikos Andronicos

A great read. The performance by Nikos is excellent. I was challenged by the story and fell in love with the characters. I feel the story got a little lost in the middle but it was easy to forgive and just enjoy it for the wonderful yet heartbreaking look into the lives of so many in society today.

Highly recommended
