Publisher's Summary

The third title in the John Puller series to follow Zero Day and The Forgotten. Military CID investigator, John Puller, has returned from his latest case in Florida to learn that his brother, Bobby, on death row at Leavenworth Military Prison for national security crimes, has escaped.

Preliminary investigations show that he may have had help in his breakout. Now he's on the run, and in disguise, and he's the military's number-one target. John Puller has a dilemma. Which comes first, loyalty to his country or to his brother? Bobby has state secrets that certain people will literally kill for. But blood is thicker than water, and the brothers are close although even John does not know for sure what Bobby really did for the government, nor if he's even guilty of his crimes. It becomes swiftly apparent, however, that Bobby's role was powerful and far-reaching. With the help of John's long-time friend and colleague, General Julie Carson, both brothers move closer to the truth from their opposing directions. And this case puts John Puller in a place he thought he'd never be, on the other side of the law, where even his skills as an investigator, and his strength as a fighter, might not be enough to save him. And his brother.

Not bad, but not as good as it's predecessors.

Previous books were a big story on a small stage, this one had the world at the brink and everyone running around taking orders from a super hero Warrant Officer, too much of a stretch. Puller is a good character and Baldacci can spin a tale but I preferred it when the story was bigger than the stakes.

Too cheesy

Over 30% of the book should have the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background.
How many times do we have to be told how heroic the Pullers are?

Have I read/heard too many of these?

Plot had some good moments but some ordinary stuff. Bad guys/girls don’t spill the beans so easily when asked. I thought Ron McLarty just read the lines - not presenting the character and almost monotone. Orlagh Cassidy did a fine job.

Another great from Baldacci

Loved it. Stirred very emotional responses in regard to John Puller Snr. letter and reunion with Robert. Got the tissues out before listening to the latter.

Yes, I liked how everything tied together

Which character – as performed by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy – was your favourite?

Puller is a complex character, but straight up and no nonsense.

OK Listen

I've read the first two and they were very fast paced from page one. This book however, was very technical and explained a lot about The Security services of the United States of America. It was a bit too detailed and wasn't as interesting as the first two. It started to pick up about half way through the book. David Baldacci is an excellent author and I commend him on his in depth knowledge. I am not disappointed, but can only give the book three stars because it was not exciting until I was truly ready to stop reading it. Turned into a much better novel with a great series of mysteries solved!

Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy were outstanding with the delivery of the story

Gets better with each book

Not a genre I ever thought I would enjoy American military but his heroes are well written and extremely likeable. Good plots several twists and turns and inevitable red herrings. Can't wait have the next one ready to start.

Way too much American heroism

I found the story not credible, especially because the main characters are all oh so brilliant and incredibly skilled. For me, the amount of American army heroism is way too much in this book. So unless you’re a massive army and superhero fan, I wouldn’t recommend listening to this work full of pathos.

Male narrator difficult listening.

Enjoyed this but was overall seriously marred by male narrator's voice, it almost sounded as though he was drunk! particularly as the female was crystal clear.
If the same narrator pops up elsewhere it is unlikely I would purchase the book.

Narration Not Great

Would you try another book written by David Baldacci or narrated by Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ?

My first David Baldacci on Audible, didn't enjoy the narration. This may sound a little strange, but Ron McLarty sounds too much like he is reading the book, is a bit stilted and his characterisation is not great. Sound effects are also not necessary and are a bit rubbish.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Have always enjoyed reading David Baldacci, so no problems with the story

Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Haven't listened to any previous performances from these narrators, but have listened to a number of other books by different narrators/ authors and the performance (in my opinion) isn't as good.

Good but...

Very original storyline intricate well thought out with a few surprises
My only criticism is that the narrator sometimes seems to be shouting or at least has a very loud Voice
The two readers male and female worked well but personally I didn't like the associated music and sound effects in some parts
Top marks for the plot

Thrilling with great twists and turns

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book has it all, a great story with real characters and enough twists and turns to make you sea sick.

What other book might you compare The Escape to, and why?

One of the things I really like about David Balldaci's books is the plot is always different there is no 'it's a Camel Club book, so it must be about.... Or it's. John Puller book so the theme must be about x y or z. This is a fresh, exciting book and stands alone in the series.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

It has to be when the Puller's get to the cottage, and find who the other 'baddie' is!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

And round the next corner is......

Any additional comments?

A book that leaves me wanting more of John Puller.

Good plot but disappointed in the execution

If you wrote the plot in bullet points, you would think this would be a great tale. However, listening to it, the story just dragged. Really disappointed as I enjoyed the other Puller books.
