Lily Moonbeam’s kitchen had three modes: simmer, sputter, and smoke. She preferred the first, but the cottage stove had opinions of its own.
This morning it gurgled a warning as she whisked dried foxglove into a viscous red broth, the spoon already sticky with what she hoped would be the final step in curing Midnight chronic hairball problem.
She leaned over the pot, breath held, as the mixture shifted from angry burgundy to a soothing, peony pink.
She reached for the weathered vial, which served as both potion and cat deterrent—Midnights eyed it warily from the window ledge, tail puffed in suspicion.
“I promise, it tastes like fish,” Lily lied. Midnight glared, a warning that took up the whole patch of sun. Lily filled the vial, stoppered it, and set it on the sill.
