Publisher's Summary

A snowstorm, a highway, a lonely hotel....

Devastated by the deaths of her parents and disillusioned with life, Caroline Daynes is in America trying to connect with their memory. Travelling to her mother's hometown of Williamsfield in Pennsylvania, she is caught in a snowstorm and forced to stop at The Egress hotel - somewhere she'd planned to visit as her parents honeymooned there.

From the moment she sets foot inside the lobby and meets the surly receptionist, she realizes this is a hotel like no other. Charming and unique, it seems lost in time with a whole cast of compelling characters sheltering behind closed doors.

As the storm deepens, so does the mystery of The Egress. Who are these people she's stranded with, what secrets do they hide? And, in a situation that's becoming increasingly nightmarish, is it possible to find solace?

Narrator Was The WORST Choice Possible For This Audiobook..!!

The choice of narrator for a book will either make or break the success of an enjoyable listen... In this case it was without a doubt the most abysmal failure.. She had a little tiny itty bitty little girl voice.. a woman in her 30’s supposedly of British origin... THEN the story is set in Pennsylvania, where she proceeds to attempt American accents for 12 characters... all with the most HORRIBLE conglomeration of country backwards Hillbilly intonations by way of Arkansas via Georgia..!! As I said... abysmal failure.. I’m getting my money back on this stinker..!!

good story

I enjoyed the story as well as the ending. My only issue was the narrator spoke way too fast! Tried to slow her down but that still didn't sound right. Take a breath in between sentences. Adventualy I got over it but thought it could have been better, read by someone else.

Worst narrator I've ever encountered

I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks and this is the most stunningly awful narration I have ever encountered. Heaven knows why the narrator thought she should whisper the entire book and her American accent is laughable. The storyline might be better than the 3 stars I bestowed but it was so hard to listen to so I'm not sure. If you would like to read this book, save your ears, buy a hard copy or the kindle version and do just that.

Narrator is so bad

Narrator is so bad I couldn't finish the book, and gave up 2 hours into it because I couldn't take it anymore.

painful narration

the narration is awful absolutely awful the American accents are very painful to listen to and the character Caroline sounds like a little girl instead of a 33 year old woman

Disappointing

I have recently finished reading Shani Struthers' Psychic Surveys series and loved all of the books, so thought I would try 'This Haunted World' series. I am afraid that both novels have both been a great disappointment to me. This is the first time I have given a written review on Audible, but this book was such a let-down after the writer's other novels. The narration was poor and child-like but the main problem for me was that the story rambled. Initially it sounded promising but after a few chapters it appeared to be going nowhere. I did stick with the story until the 'predictable' end and wished I had given up after the first chapter. The narrative is dull and it's easy to lose interest in it very quickly, what a shame. Sadly, 'This Haunted World' series is not for me (the narration in The Venetian was so bad I stopped listening after the first chapter), but I am looking forward to more of Psychic Surveys.

Stephen King is in no danger here

Well, I usually only write reviews if I feel passionate about the book so either good or bad. Guess what? This one was dire. To be fair I did listen to it all in the vain hope that it would improve but sadly not. The story is predictable, there is no suspense and the “horror” is kind of an add on as an afterthought. The main character is weak and made worse by the appalling narrative. The narrator has a childish voice which she insisted on using for Caroline ( the main characters) her American accents are terrible and she is prone to over acting. I actually applauded when the book ended.

The Accents!

The narrator was awful. If most of the characters are American then maybe someone who could do American accents would have been better!! The voice for the British main character was sickly sweet and very cringey. The story itself wasnt bad, just ruined by the voices! Did I mention the narration was bad?!

Wrong actor for the role.

Not her best book. this dragged in places, ending felt like a rushed compromise. made worse by the poor reading of the actress in the role. Bad enunciation and accents. Her voice doesnt match the part..she would be better reading teen fiction in my opinion.

Intriguing

As always Shani has told an intriguing and interesting tale.
Caroline is visiting America and unluckily she ends up in a bad snow storm. She had wanted to visit the hotel but now ends up having to stay there.
The characters she meets make this tale so addictive. I had to listen to it as quickly as I could.
I had already read the book, listening to it did not spoil anything. The book and the audio book though the same story are so good I would honestly recommend both.
The narrator kept the flow so well. Changing between characters so well from the likeable to the menacing.
The whole package is haunting, inviting and so well described its vivid as you listen to it.
