Eight years a soldier, Peter Ash came home from Iraq and Afghanistan with only one souvenir: what he calls 'white static', a buzzing claustrophobia due to post-traumatic stress that has driven him to spend a year roaming the Pacific coast's mountains and forests, sleeping under the stars.

But when a friend from the marines commits suicide, Ash returns to civilisation to help the man's widow and two young children. While repairing her dilapidated porch, he makes two unwelcome discoveries: the first is a dog, the meanest, ugliest dog he's ever laid eyes on, guarding a suitcase; the second unwelcome surprise is the suitcase's contents—$400,000 in cash and four slabs of plastic explosive.

Just what was his friend caught up in during his final days? Ash will find that the demons of war aren't easy to leave behind....

Critic Reviews

"Lots of characters get compared to my own Jack Reacher, but Peter Ash is the real deal." (Lee Child)

i enjoyed thos book. I find it hard to find a book in this thriller genre that isn't focussed around the "super hero American soldier" the warrior that is invincible has a heart of gold and does everything for patriotism and reads like an add for the military.

This book was well apart from that reflecting the damage combat can do and the reverbing damage felt far from the battle field by friends and family. I look forward to reading more of the series and hope to see more like this on the market.

We have enough of the super soldier, America is flawless, brown people and Russians are the devil novels on the market. Altogether a good read.

A well written story by Nick Petrie, an author new to me. He manages to keep the suspense up till the very end. He has created believable characters, everyone, with few exceptions, has flaws. Some know their limitations and work towards redemption. Stephen Mendel's narration is engaging and I enjoyed listening to his voice. I would happily recommend a listen to Nick Petrie's The Drifter, and I might even look for Peter Ash Book 2.

Who is the Drifter, & why is the static so loud?
