About this listen

The powerful chronicle of the women who used their sewing skills to survive the Holocaust, stitching beautiful clothes at an extraordinary fashion workshop created within one of the most notorious WWII death camps.

At the height of the Holocaust, 25 young inmates of the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp - mainly Jewish women and girls - were selected to design, cut and sew beautiful fashions for elite Nazi women in a dedicated salon. It was work that they hoped would spare them from the gas chambers.

This fashion workshop - called the Upper Tailoring Studio - was established by Hedwig Höss, the camp commandant's wife, and patronised by the wives of SS guards and officers. Here, the dressmakers produced high-quality garments for SS social functions in Auschwitz, and for ladies from Nazi Berlin's upper crust.

Drawing on diverse sources - including interviews with the last surviving seamstress - The Dressmakers of Auschwitz follows the fates of these brave women. Their bonds of family and friendship not only helped them endure persecution but also to play their part in camp resistance. Weaving the dressmakers' remarkable experiences within the context of Nazi policies for plunder and exploitation, historian Lucy Adlington exposes the greed, cruelty and hypocrisy of the Third Reich and offers a fresh look at a little-known chapter of World War II and the Holocaust.

What a gem of a book! It is amazing that 80 years after the war that fresh information is being collated and published. Beautifully written and beautifully read.

With sensitivity and skill, Adlington paints the stories of horror and resilience in appreciable detail. The women of the Upper Tailoring Salon felt to me like compatriots in the tragic and triumph of their experiences. Especially nuanced was the subject of Hedwig Höss and the bizarre brutality at the crossroads of her ideology and personal life. To think of Nazi women profiting at such awful human cost and never owning the carnage of their choices defies explanation, but the author handles this with a careful juxtaposition of words. I will carry this story and the images it has raised in my heart to provoke me towards more compassion and wisdom.

After listening to an interview of the author, I knew I had to read her book as I knew nothing about how these women survived the Holocaust through sewing fashionable clothing for the German elite. Besides listening to the book being read by the author I also was able to see photos of the women via the Kindle edition of the book. I highly recommend the book, especially with the rise of antisemitism around the world.

Heartbreakingly captivating. I struggle to find the words to describe this story of such otherworldly experiences. Fascinating to hear it from such a different viewpoint to what I’ve previously heard, my heart is overflowing with emotion.

amazing

At times I was a bit confused with who the people were and the time that part of the story was taking place in but that didn’t detract from the subject matter of the horrific time all the prisoners had to endure in the concentration camps. I listened to the audio version so wasn’t flicking the pages back to check on thing.
Humanity still has a lot to learn as there are even more holocaust deniers now than ever there were.

A book everyone needs to read. The experiences of everyone who went to the concentration camps needs to be heard
