Publisher's Summary

A kingdom divided cannot stand. For those caught in the middle, it means death.

For centuries, humans and dragons existed side-by-side in Alveria, bonded by their care of one another. But no longer. After decades with no viable eggs, humans far outnumber dragons, and the survival of the species appears bleak. The outlook for everyday humans is little better as rogue dragons raid and torment villages. Yet it’s far worse for the tamers, beaten and killed simply for serving the noble dragons.

But eking by at the bottom of Alverian society isn’t any easier for 17-year-old Kaelan Younger. Harder still when her loyalty to the dragon crown is no secret. But when her dying mother reveals a horrifying truth about her identity, Kaelan is thrust into a world for which she is ill-prepared.

Faced with a new life at the proving grounds for humans and dragons alike, Kaelan must reconcile not just her past, but embrace the future laid out before her. When her responsibilities as an Akademy tamer collide with her feelings for a powerful dragon shifter, it will take everything she has to prepare for the coming danger threatening them both. The fate of the dragons she has sworn to serve rests in her hands.

Now, Kaelan is no longer an outsider. She’s the enemy.

Excellent Teen Fantasy

This is a new author for me. I’m glad I decided to give this new series a try. The world created by the author is unique and interesting. I was hooked from beginning to conclusion. There is the right amount of adventure, romance, drama, and intrigue.

Narration was well done and brought the story to life.

The characters are well developed and the story did not take long to suck me in. I love having dual narration so I can clearly understand where both main characters are coming from.

I’m glad the author did NOT conclude in a major cliffhanger but wrapped things up a bit and hinted of what is to come. I’m really looking forward to book 2. This is a great start to a new clean dragon series that can be read by any age group.

overall a good read.

if you are a young adult this book is great for you. the author explains every reasoning behind every emotion and decision at length. if you're an adult these run on can get kind of tedious. I found myself skipping past the parts of the book where the main characters over explain their thoughts.

besides that.. there's magic and dragons and budding romance. every so often there's even some twists and turns. this is very much a coming of age story. to go from child to a little more grown up at the end.

worth a read. I enjoyed this series but it was a little hard to get through.

Wonderful story and narration! Rebekah has the perfect style for this story. These books need to be made into a movie series.

Excellent story!

This book was purely a reflex purchases. I did not read the synopsis nor was I familiar with the author or narrator . I just needed something to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised by how well written and captivating the story was. I am going to get the other books ASAP. I have to give kudos to the narrator. She did a really great job bring the various characters to life. Well worth the credit.

A good book

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Although this was geared towards a younger audience, it was still quite enjoyable. My son and I listened to this book together and we both enjoyed it. The narration is done well and the story was well written. I thought the author did a great job world building and the main character had depth. All in all, a great listen and one I would recommend for fans of fantasy of all ages.

Gotta Love a Good Dragon Story

I have to say I absolutely adored Kaelan—she was everything you could hope for in a strong YA protagonist. She never backed down and stood her ground even when all hope seemed to be lost. I especially loved her relationship with the Prince after they were bonded.

While Kaelan did have some unlikeable moments, I thought she was a well-rounded character throughout. She never forgot the purpose of her struggles, and even doubted herself when the truth came out about her father. That made her seem very real.

If you’re a fan of epic fantasy, this book has a very amazing world filled with dragons, dragon tamers, and dragon shifters. Deep characterization and excellent descriptions really bring the reading to life. Not to mention the narration.

This is one of my favorite reads of 2019, and I am super excited that this is a series because it means that I don’t have to say goodbye to Kaelan’s awesome world just yet.

Wow. Loved this.

Excellent story that holds your attention. The story is a different take on dragons. We really enjoyed it. Can't wait for book two. I have never listened to this author but if her other books are like this, I will.

Narration was very good. I would listen to this narrator again.

How to be a trainer

The kingdom of Alveria has always been ruled by dragons. The dragons can do what ever they want, but they need to have a tamer to control their more draconic instincts. A tamer is always someone who is born of a dragon mating with a human. This is almost always a noble that has that honor.

Kaelan is the exception to that rule. She is one of the very rare students at the Alveria Dragon Akademy that is not a noble. She needs to work very hard to find her way in the Akademy.

The story does a great job explaining the Akademy's society and how the people can interact with the dragons. The author came up with very interesting ideas about the dragons that change the way dragons are normally seen in a fantasy novel. This was a very enjoyable trip through the school's halls and I am very excited to read the sequel!

Took a few to get used to the angle of the book

I have listened to all of the other books in this authors series from first person perspective. It took a while to get used to this authors shift in perspective but once I got used to it I love this book.

Beginning to another great series

This is the eighth book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would gladly listen to another. I want to listen to all her books!
I like how the people are a mix of humans and dragons (people who shift into dragon form). Despite dragons being the monarchs and upper class, their hold on their position is tenuous. For an unknown reason, their eggs are not hatching and fewer are being laid. There are signs of an uprising amongst the humans. One man is more vocal than others, but there is something strange going on. Kaelan is sent to the Akademy after learning who her father is. She is not a Noble so she is not accepted by many of the students and teachers. She does however form a bond with one of the students- a bond that may get in the way of her becoming a dragon tamer.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Rebekah Nemethy ) and I would listen to another. She did a wonderful job narrating the story so I could focus on being immersed in the story and not that I was being read to. Her character voices are well done.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing. This book is appropriate for young teens yet a great listen for adults. There is a conclusion to this book despite the lead into the next book.

Pete's Dragon meets Twilight!

After listening to all of the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik I fancied another dragon read, this was not that book, although that could partly be down to the choice of narrator! Slow and over pronounced at times I found listening to this book like Kaelan's week long up hill journey to the Akademy must have been (a struggle)!
