About this listen

‘Conversation is like a dear little baby that is brought in to be handed around. You must rock it, nurse it, keep it on the move if you want to keep smiling.’

Compiled posthumously by the author’s husband, John Middleton Murray, The Doves’ Nest and Other Stories features mostly unfinished or unpublished masterpieces by the feminist icon and writer Katherine Mansfield.

Written in the tradition of her other works, this stunning anthology of short stories features narratives of great emotional depth, nuance and complexity. Exploring social class, family dynamics and failed romances, these stories offer powerful meditations on the profundity of everyday life. From a mother’s protective love for her child, to the insecurities which can plague a young mind, Mansfield gets to the emotional core of her protagonists. Although incomplete and fragmentary in places, Mansfield’s writing still carries soaring lyricism and is transformative in its storytelling. This audiobook edition is beautifully narrated by Kristin Atherton.

Katherine Mansfield (1888 – 1923) was a New Zealand writer and critic. She was an important figurehead of the modernist movement, befriending the likes of Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence amongst others. Her works regularly explored themes such as sexuality, religion and existentialism, and have been translated into twenty-five different languages across the world.
