About this listen

A S Byatt's fairy tales and fables are among the best-loved features of her fiction. Innumerable listeners have asked for the two marvellous fairy tales in Possession - 'The Glass Coffin' and 'Gode's Tale' of the Breton Naie des Trepasses - to be published separately.

Here they take their place with three other stories with medieval and oriental settings.

The title story, The Djinn and the Nightingale's Eye, a long story about an Englishwoman in Turkey who unwittingly releases a genie from his bottle, is a reflection on women's lives, on magic and on the power of story-telling itself.

A S Byatt uses the English language so beautifully to take us into magical realms and allow us to recapture the feelings of childhood when we experienced ‘Once upon a time’ stories, Suspend your disbelief and take delight in these beautifully read tales.

I watched Three Thousand Years of Longing on Netflix 5 times (fascinated). That's what made me buy this book.
The movie is better which is unusual, it's normally the other way around.
Nevertheless, I still enjoyed all of this book with its other little quirky tales as well. Loved Patience Tomlinson's narration.

Very Entertaining

Was looking forward to reading the book after the movie. didn't disapoint. 3000 of Solitude, it was nice to imagine the actors in the books characters.

was expecting to dive straight into the Djinn story but had to endure other short stories first. When it did get to the headline act, it took forever to when the Djinn came into the picture. 1 star to the narration as well. Did not add anything to the story, hopefully the short film is better

Disappointed
