About this listen
Now a major motion picture, The Disaster Artist, starring James Franco, Alison Brie, Zoey Deutch, Lizzy Caplan, Zac Efron, Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Kristen Bell, Seth Rogen, Sharon Stone, and Judd Apatow.
In 2003, an independent film called The Room - starring and written, produced, and directed by a mysteriously wealthy social misfit named Tommy Wiseau - made its disastrous debut in Los Angeles.
Described by one reviewer as 'like getting stabbed in the head', the $6 million film earned a grand total of $1,800 at the box office and closed after two weeks. Over a decade later, The Room is an international cult phenomenon whose legions of fans attend screenings featuring costumes, audience rituals, merchandising, and thousands of plastic spoons.
In The Disaster Artist, Greg Sestero, Tommy's costar, recounts the film's bizarre journey to infamy, explaining how the movie's many nonsensical scenes and bits of dialogue came to be and unravelling the mystery of Tommy Wiseau himself. But more than just a riotously funny story about cinematic hubris, The Disaster Artist is an honest and warm testament to friendship.

Chances are you’re familiar with 2003’s The Room, a film that’s been dubbed the worst movie ever made — and a bona fide cult phenomenon. Originally pitched as a serious drama about a love triangle, this warped brainchild written, produced by and starring the enigma Tommy Wiseau, instead became known for its plot inconsistencies and terrible acting.
The Disaster Artist, written and narrated by none other than Greg Sestero, who portrayed Mark in the film, takes a fast-paced and hilarious behind-the-scenes look into the film's bizarre journey to infamy. While it’s hard not to laugh out loud at this recounting of this unique roller coaster journey, this listen is above all an honest and warm testament to friendship. Whether you’re a fan of The Room or the star-studded 2017 adaptation of The Disaster Artist, this is one audiobook you won’t want to pause.
Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell did a superb job of crafting this material which is cleverly and expertly read by Greg.
As someone has already stated in a previous review Greg's take on Tommy's voice is worth the ticket alone, (well for me at least).
This serves as a reminder that while Tommy Wiseau may not be the worlds best actor there is no denying he is a curiously fascinating and compellingly magnetic person and this is what truly underscores The Rooms unheralded success.
With Tommy Wisau starring, producing and directing what could go wrong, right?
The book left me wanting more and I do hope there is more coming as Greg has stumbled across a potential goldmine here, not only with this material, but also as a voice actor.
Captivated from start to finish!

Hearing about ‘The Room’, the first question I had was ‘who on earth agreed to be in this film?’ Greg Sestero is your man - a guy who is seemingly so laid back and willing to see the best in people that he would follow Tommy Wiseau into absolute peril.
He does a gorgeous reading of this. During my commute, it felt like a friend telling one long, hilarious story - complete with an amazing Tommy impersonation and genuine fondness. You get the impression that Greg enjoys telling you about this disaster - there’s no malice in Greg as he good humouredly explains how close he came to making it in Hollywood before he put his name to ‘The Room’. He affectionately references audience rituals and fanfavourite scenes in a way that is so wholesome and pure that you, like Tommy, may feel a dark force in you call out to Babyface to be your best friend.
If ‘The Room’ was a test from above, Greg Sestero may have been the only man capable of coming out on top of it. Many are inspired by Tommy’s blunt, singleminded determination to crack into Hollywood, whether they want him or not. But perhaps more inspiring is that Greg, who had the look, talent and charm of a young star, might fail and laugh about it with you later.
Thank you, Greg.
