A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror. Turn off the television - in fact, why don't you turn off all the lights except for the one over your favourite chair? - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. I think I can make you believe in them. Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk.

Great adventure
King’s overview says to him this story writes itself... to me the series was hard to get into but it is now really picking up pace. I found The Waste Lands thrilling and exciting at the same time. The characters are, as always, brilliant, especially King’s invention of Blane the Mono (Charlie the Choo Choo).

Frank Muller is the voice of Roland.
Where does The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very High, dark tower series started me off on Audio books & the late Frank Muller is my favourite narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Roland, tough gunslinger character, very similar to David Gemmells Jerusalem man (aka Jon Shannow). Read superbly by Muller. Even Stephen King said he would listen to Mullers reading to get in the atmosphere to write the next dark tower novel.
Have you listened to any of Frank Muller’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've listened to many of his performances and all are good, but in my opinion this is his best.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I just love the world and characters he has created, so strange & disturbing. Have read and listened to the whole series, and without a doubt prefer listening because Muller takes you right into the world with his powerful performance.

The narrator does supreme justice to this intriguing, masterfully crafted and truly original series. It is unusual not to bore of a narrator after 18hrs of listening and this itself is testament to the creative vocal genius of Frank Muller. The uniqueness of each character is delivered with uncanny consistency and utterly plausible designer voice.
I would thoroughly recommend this entire series.

Brings it all together
This, the third book in the Dark Tower saga, really brings the ka-tet together and sets them on their path. It has some very dark concepts and unpleasant sections both because it deals with negative emotions, war, assault, abandonment etc and also because it shows weaknesses in each of the characters. It ends on a heck of a 'To be Continued' which feels quite frankly cheap, but I'm one of the fortunate ones that had the next book loaded and ready to go !!!

Wanted to Stop but Could Not
Frank Muller seemed to take perverse pleasure in extending each horrific second and left me breathless. Fabulous, thoughtful narration.
The characters are more 3 dimensional with each becoming more aware of their roll in the quest. This book in the series is a page turner with plots and scenarios evolving and a cliffhanger ending.

Ok.. Now I love this Narrator
Well, I reviewed book 2 and was at that point a bit peeved that the Narrator had changed from Book one. I thought it was the narrator I didnt like, but I was wrong - it was infact my pet hate that narrator changed in a book series and nothing else. I find that I now love this narrator and cant imagine the characters having been any other way. A bit of google searching reveals that unfortunately Frank Muller was unable to complete this series after being in an accident and that is the reason for the alternating narrators. Both are excellent, I am sure it will jar again when Frank Muller is no longer reading but I am sure it will become as enjoyable again very shortly afterwards. I am very glad that book one has the "new" narrator as I will have heard his voice already when the change comes again. The Story is utterly superb as is the narration, I had no idea that I was listening to and giving a bad review of a narrator who was considered amongst the best, after many hours listening to this Narrator I can now see why he was chosen to read these books and it is a real shame that he has since passed away and will never complete the set.

Big Stephen King fan but...
I love Mr King, I've probably read more Stephen King than I have any other writer and his horror is the epitomy of what is possible in genre fiction. I've read or listened to every book he's written and as much of his short fiction (which I normally don't like) as I can lay my hands on. If asked to name my favourite ten novels I'd be shocked if five of them weren't Stephen King novels, and Pet Cemetery is the out and out scariest book I have ever had the (dis)pleasure of reading. I've been saving The Dark Tower series for some time and enjoyed books I and II thoroughly, both excellent. But this book is just boring. It drags on and on and on and on and nothing happens. Excellent recording, a very fine narrator but there is about two hundred pages of plot made into a five hundred page novel. Hoping book IV picks up a bit....
