A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror. Turn off the television - in fact, why don't you turn off all the lights except for the one over your favourite chair? - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. I think I can make you believe in them. Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk.

Everything is familiar. But everything has changed. Coming back to the little community is like walking into a nightmare for Jim Gardener, poet, drunk, potential suicide. It all looks the same: the house; the furniture; Jim's friend, Bobbi; her beagle (though ageing); even the woods out at the back. But it was in the woods that Bobbi stumbled over the odd, part-buried object and felt a peculiar tingle as she brushed the soft earth away. Everything is familiar. But everything is about to change.

Deeply compelling story, madly talented narrator.
Forget all clichés about Stephen King. The prose of this book is colourful, the suspense tangible, and the fantastical atmosphere juxtaposed against a brutal sense of reality makes the twists all the more exciting. Moreover, I believe this narrator (Frank Muller) could do any accent he wanted; enhance all suspense intended within the words. Fantastically entertaining!

This was totally unexpected after experiencing the first book of this series but it had me hooked very quickly and I am chomping at the bit to get started on the next installment! If you are reading this review, have no doubt that Stephen King is a master of words and this will not disappoint. The narration is on point and made falling into this story such a pleasure! Frank Muller brought things to life in a way that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Such a great book!
So I wasn't sure about continuing with the Dark Tower series after The Gunslinger. It was slow, confusing and the narrator was horrible. But I decided to give the second book a couple chapters. I finished this book in a couple days. The pace is quicker, the action is better and the story instantly hooks. The narrator again was a little hard to get used to but that might just be my own preference. Definitely recommend anyone who isn't sure about continuing with the series to give this book a go before turning away. It will change your mind!

A Great Book
More of a series of character introductions with little real headway made toward the Tower, but the characters are amazing, as are the circumstances under which they're introduced and it's written and performed with skill. As i said, there's not much distance made toward the Tower here or what even awaits them there, but the adventures the Gunslinger goes on to 'draw the three' are full of peril, wonder, intrigue, tension, drama and all with a surprising amount of humor throughout. The beach, the doors, the lobstrocities (dad-a-chum?) are wonderfully realised. Other than the vivid presence that is the Gunslinger, it's peppered with excellently written characters all-round with scenes tackled from multiple angles and points of view in way that makes such writing seem easy, when it certainly is not. A real 'page' turner (if there is such a thing in an audio book), often engrossing and an incredible performance from Frank Muller. I can't recommend it highly enough and can't wait to listen to The Wastelands to see how the journey continues...

Great writing but slightly thin story
If you could sum up The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three in three words, what would they be?
Slightly thin story
Who was your favorite character and why?
Roland and Eddie Dean seem to be a good match for one another
What three words best describe Frank Muller’s performance?
Nowhere near the performance of George Guidall who read the first book in the series, The Gunslinger. Frank Muellers narration feels laboured and uncomfortable, a monotonous droning that from time to time made me pause the story to give my ears a break. His voice for Eddie is identical with Lenny from the Simpsons, which makes the emotional complexity that King tries to weave into his character unconvincing. Not a good performance at all.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
One tower, three gunslingers
Any additional comments?
This story, while interesting and extremely well written, is not quite as engaging as the first of the series. I was drawn to Roland, to his quest, his perfection, his solitude in this world that has somehow moved on. The contribution by Eddie and Susanna and their emotional baggage and split personalities amount to little more than a confusing distraction for which there seems to be little justification at least for the time being. Eddie and Susannas relationship is confusing, their romance is surprising and not credible. Who married them? And why is east on their left side when they are travelling north, up the beach? Something to find out later, perhaps...

Anyone else keep thinking this is the third book?
Despite it being clearly numbered, I keep remembering this story as the third of the series rather than the second, and I fall into the trap of thinking there hasn't been as much development by this stage as there should be. Then I realise my mistake and I'm impressed all over again how so many new characters and developments are worked into the story. This is a great second volume to what starts as quite a confusing story, with more exposition worked into the narrative than you'll realise until a future re-reading.

So Glad I Stuck Around
Fabulous characters, imaginative, dangerous creatures, excitement, sentiment, love, sadness - what more could you want.
The main character Roland had so few redeeming qualities and the storyline was so dismal in the first book of the series that I was unsure whether I could read a whole series.
In book two we are introduced to three new characters who are compellingly different to each other and prove the perfect compliment to Roland. We start to realise that he has many fascinating levels of complexity to his personality after a long history of experiences.
Although Mr King cites many influences for the series the storyline is original and exceptionally well told as only he is capable. The first book to me had the wordiness and pretention of a young writer. The second book is more like the Stephen King I know as the superior wordsmith and master storyteller.
The narrator for the first book was quite good however Frank Muller brings a more vivid interpretation of the convoluted characters.

Fantastic
Another fantastic novel by Stephen King. When I first read The Gunslinger (The First in the Dark Tower Novel) it felt to me, more like a Western. I had a vision of Clint Eastwood in a bad Western movie. I pushed through it as it's Stephen King and I expected that The Dark Tower series as a whole would get better and really bring out the parts of King's books that I love and that I have come to expect from the master that is Stephen King.
At the very start of The Drawing of the Three, it grabbed me. It struck me straight away as different from The Gunslinger and once this one grabbed me, it didn't let me go, not even for a second. Every word of this book drew me in and I was fully under the spell. It is a great novel and one that read more like a Fantasy.
If you are planning on reading The Dark Tower series and you are unsure about it, I urge you to read it anyway. Push your way through The Gunslinger if you have to because you will not regret it once you get to this novel.
The Drawing of the Three has me firmly in the Dark Tower series and I can't wait to read more of it.

Hated the narrator
I was super happy with the 1st book and I love the book series so much. But Frank Muller already ruined the Talisman for me. I don't think I can handle another part read by him. His voice does not at all match the mood of the book and he is so insanely overacting every single sentence.

Dear God... The narrator...
Impossible to listen to this guy! It might be a great book, but this narrator just turned me off of it massively..

What a journey.
Loved it. Hooked. Better that the one before. Desperate to hear the next one.

Narrator changed from book one!
I didn't really get a chance to review the story seeing as the narrator was so terribly rushed I didn't feel I could catch a breath. Book returned unread.

Engaging
Fantastic characterisation, vivid descriptions, great narration. King at his best. What more can you ask for really?

Great book but terrible narration
I read this series as a teenager and loved them. Decided to revisit them years on. Book one was narrated really well, but the narrator on this one is unlistenable. Every sentence ends with a dramatic breathy style and is extremely annoying. Totally takes away from the words themselves as I end up waiting for the melodramatic conclusion to the sentence. Such a shame and there doesn’t seem to be another narrator option as some books have and I was really looking forward to listening to these books whilst I drive and work. He’s narrating the next one too it seems so I’ll just have to physically read them and return to listening once the narrator changes again in book 4.

A wonderful story but hard to listen to
This is King at his best with great characters and a gripping story. It’s such a shame that this audio book performance made me grimace and laugh out loud at various moments. The performer makes the whole thing sound like a tacky infomercial with his tone of voice and intonation. Such a shame.
