Publisher's Summary

The Dark Side is the ninth instalment in the Alex Hunter series from best-selling author Greig Beck.

Hundreds of thousands of miles away on the dark side of the moon, the Russian lunar base has self-destructed - all personnel are dead, except one. Olga Sobakin, the lone survivor, seeks refuge at the rival American base.

Olga tells the Americans her base was attacked by a horrifying and nightmarish creature - the pattern was the same - people vanished, leaving nothing behind but shredded clothing and an unidentifiable waste product. The Americans are sceptical of her story at first, but then people begin to disappear....

Back on Earth, just before the American lunar base went completely dark, a single message is received - ‘Lifeform’. Intercepted whisperings from Russian intelligence indicate a deadly spreading attack and a rising global threat. Escalated to priority one, there’s only one team up for the task.

Alex Hunter and his elite group of HAWCs are on a rescue mission to the desolate and darkest unknown. Who, or what, awaits them on the dark side?

uh oh....

I'd really hate to live inside Greigs mind! Where the hell he gets these idea's from is not something for mortal man to know. As always when you read one of his books...leave your sense of reality at the door and buckle up!

my review of the dark side

the dark side entertaining but certainly not one of Beck's best and a little over long and repetitive

Dark Side Of The Moon

I really enjoyed this book, great characters and the thing was something that Dr Matt Kearns would love. I did feel sorry for Sophia but I think she will reappear in another book. I hope that the next book is a is a collaboration between The Arcadian and Matt Kearns whilst dealing with the offspring of the thing they though the shuttle destroyed maybe even Joshua comes into his own. Again the narration was spot on Sean Mangan is the voice of The Arcadian.

I was underwhelmed with the way things played out

don't get me wrong, the story concept was good, but it felt rushed or condensed the way cinema movies released inbetween blockbusters feel. basically I wish things were fleshed out a bit more. most of the story felt like dialogue without doing all that much. I'm chalking it up to the story setting though and do plan to give the next book in the series a shot when it is out. the story still has potential.

Lots of Screaming in Space

I was interested to see where things would go given how the last book ended. The Dark Side didn't disappoint. It not only delivered a fantastic follow-up to the cliffhanger at the end of book 8, but it also took Alex Hunter to the dark side of the moon for a John Carpenter-like adventure.

WTF Happened?

I don't understand. Did someone ghost write this? The most basic tenants of science are ignored. The characters are all whopping morons. They see what is happening, are told what is happening and yet they still choose to disbelieve. Everyone makes the dumbest decisions without fail. Perfect examples are "rescuing" people from the surface of the moon, who are wearing shredded space suits open to hard vacuum because they are somehow 'still alive'. Hawks telling civilians military secrets, despite knowing that the entity is kind of like John Carpenter's The Thing and has been mimicking people. Sophia the mad-lovesick robot keeps Alex in a coma for 2 years by plugging into his brain but nobody even gives a thought that maybe he should get an x-ray, CT ir MRI. The creature mimicking a missing researcher, naked, on the moon's surface and he/it is able to speak naturally even though there is no atmosphere. Every Beck book before has been great but this one is a huge disappointment.

“Specimen X37 is… robust”

“The Dark Side”
Greig Beck’s horror/thriller based on a classic Sci-fiction tale of an alien life form preying on a trapped group of humans cut-off & stranded in an isolated scientific research facility.

(1938 )
“Who Goes There?”
John W. Capbell Jr.’s original novel of a scientific crew stranded in the Antarctica encountering a utterly alien creature who can transform into the likeness of it’s victims.

(1951)
“The Thing From Another World”
A scientific crew encounters an alien.
A weird creature that mews like a cat, is utterly hairless, has no nerve endings, bleeds green, and drinks human blood. .
It reproduces itself by podding.
It’s more intelligent that any man, and stronger than any ten men.
It’s impervious to bullets.…AND, IT’S A VEGETABLE.
Eighteen creature designs to finally satisfy director Howard Hawks’ vision of the “Thing”.
A humanoid figure that was 8 feet tall, played by a young James Arness.

(1981)
“The THING”
John Carpenter wrote and directed this remake featuring special effects by Bottin with help from Stan Winston.
A remake that followed the more fluid aspects of the original novel’s transforming alien parasite that could mimic life forms it attacked.
“The THING”’s theatrical release received mild reaction because it was considered “too Gross”.
However, in Video & DVD it grew legs, and the THING infected a generation of cult followers, and became one of the most influential horror films today.

(2021)
“The Dark Side”
Greig Beck’s horror/action/thriller based on the same classic tale of an alien life form preying on trapped humans.
It’s good.
Gives you everything you want from the THING mythos.

Greig Beck weaves a cleaver tale explaining how this THING could possibly exist, evolve, and actually “BE” out there.
A cleaver creation story of an infamously creepy monster.

Best Lines:
Russian scientist: “It grew so quickly! We were delighted… at first.”
Russian scientist: “The monster exceeded expectations!”w
Russian military commander: “I should kill you myself.”

My favorite…
“You flew dogs to the moon… to feed to your pet mushroom?!”

SAM
Poor Sam… I love the character of Sam.
He’s one of my favorites, (out side of KC, ‘course) and Sam’s practically the mightiest warrior created by human hands.
However, in this tale…well… none of that seems to help him out.
Poor Sam.

While I was reading the last part of the book, you know, the part where the tension is ratcheted up to such extreme heights you think your going to have a heart attack just reading it, well, I was wondering if Greig Beck writes his books backwards.
You know what I mean?
An Incredible action scene happening in the most amazing location, with the most interestingd characters, against the most horrible enemy in the most gory battle.
Then, Grieg starts to figure out how to get all the characters to that one place for that one fight scene… and that takes up the rest of the book.

So…the more bizarre the finale the longer the book.
This is a pretty long book, and thus it has a pretty awesome ending.

Terrifying book, fantastic listen

Another fantastic Alex Hunter book. My favorite writer currently. I devour Griegs books. Like a great movie or great piece of music. You don't want to stop watching or listening but you don't want it to end either. Fan since the first book Beneath the Dark Ice. Greigs books just keep on getting better and better. Beneath the Dark Ice was one of those books you read and think, theres no way this guy is going to be able to pull off another books as interesting or frightening but he does. My favorite Greig Beck book is always the latest aa I havent gone on the thrill ride yet.

Supposedly Smart People Being Really Dumb!

Mr. Mangan does an amazing job as the narrator. I found this book to be a cheap rip off of The Thing and Paul E. Cooley's The Black series. Those books were good. This book, not so much. A series of people, who should know better, making one really dumb decision after another. It was a true struggle to finish this book. I won't be buying the next one. Probably wouldn't even listen to it if it was given to me free.

Hope it's not last one

Reminds me of the ‘Thing’ by John Carpenter and the Blob. Bring on the next book.

'the thing' but on the moon with a silly monster

Very Drawn out. Good background research to do with the science in space.
Pointless android side-plot, weak non-conclusive ending. Mediocre at best.
