NL is def one of the best writers in the Tartan Noir crime category. He beats more well known authors like JD Kirk, Adrian McGinty etc. He is the up there with Andrew Redmond.

Typically it's impossible to find storyline that are actually realistic, but this one is actually something that would've happened already. Though it's something 99% of people have no idea about. The character's handling of events may even sound fanciful, but it's literally what happens. ESPECIALLY the Russian component. and that's what people don't know about, so they may find it feels like a conspiracy theory and a little extreme/ ridiculous, but it's EXACTLY what Russia does. (They spend more on propaganda than the entire Ukrainian war budget. and the people that have benefited the most from the current Strait of Hormus closing its actually Russia. Trump deopped the sanctions on their oil and they've quite literally made billions in 6 weeks!)

It's very clear that NL actually WAS a police detective, as the police procedural aspect is one of the strongest I've ever read in all of UK crime series. His accuracy with the trade craft for the MI5 side of things isn't quite as good, though def not bad. (If you read Jack Beaumont's The Frenchman, you'll learn the true trade craft, as he only recently retired from the role. Once you read that is glaringly obvious how little 99.99% of authors actually know about being a spy before they write about it. it's the reason I didn't get into NL's spy series, even though I'm struggling to find decent books to read!)

NLs characters are always believable, and i like that he's dropped back from the Max Craigie - Hero complex, where only he had the intelligence to come up with all the ideas, only he is good enough to win the fights etc. much like all JD Kirk's DCI Jack Logan series, which is just ridiculous! At least NL really shows how a true team works, how literally everybody is involved in developing plans and solutions. And same goes for physical attributes and the hero complex most detective protagonists have where they're always the ones winning the fights, rescuing everyone, miraculously finding strength & willpower where no one else seems to manage to be anywhere near the hero's level. It's part of why those books are SO unrealistic, and very frustrating. it also makes them incredibly boring cause you always know the hero will have all the answers etc. and that they're personal demons (EVERY TIME! 🙄) will also miraculously only bother them when it's convenient. That's something NL avoids. Yes his protagonist has personal demons, and yes he pushes the boundaries of what's allowed, and yet of course he always gets away with it. But NL shows that its only the rest of the team that enable the protagonist to manage his issues. it's similarly nice that NL doesn't make his hero a male that's divorced cause he was a bad dad cause of his issues with being a detective etc. Urgh, that storyline is just so lazy! so I was glad when NL realised his error and made it so that the protagonist has a good personal relationship, as do the rest of his team.

There's still more detective crime clichès than I would like, but NL definitely seems to be gradually writing most of them out. and it's VERY clear just how much NL has improved from his first book! given he was a detective and not an author, I think he's done really well and worked hard at improving. Im grateful because it means I get another great story to read.

my only gripe is that he only writes about police corruption and gang warfare. I wish he wrote more about other kinds of policing like serial killer etc, just because his books are great and c in struggling to find other decent series! I could've really read 200-250 books last year if I could've found them! it was so frustrating reading books that I only have 3 stars to, because I had nothing else. but if Angus King is the narrator you know it's going to be one star better than the story itself is worth.

Another solid police corruption/drug gang story

Excellent read/ listen! Niels writing makes you have a front seat to the goings on, so graphic, so descriptive, so enticing.
The gangs all back, Ross is his usual gruff, loveable but secretly managerial proficient self. Barney surprises us again but not how you suspect....
The touch of softness surrounding new life is just right. We all wish we could reach out and both hug and shake some sense into Max but we have his aunt and Janiefor that.
and....the connection to Bruce is so great. Cant wait for the next one!

sometimes true justice prevails
