Story
At the end of the fourth year of the Crisis Era, Yun Tianming, riddled with cancer, chose to end his life. But death for Yun Tianming is merely the first step in a journey that will place him on the front line of a war that has raged since the beginning of time. As Yun Tianming lay dying, his brain was extracted from his body, flash frozen, put aboard a spacecraft and launched on a trajectory to intercept the Trisolarian First Fleet. It was a desperate plan. Story
Mars. The red planet. A new frontier for humanity: a civilisation where humans can live in peace, lord and master of all they survey. But this isn't Space City from those old science-fiction books. It's more like Hell City, built into and from a huge crater. There's a big silk canopy over it, feeding out atmosphere as we generate it, little by little, because we can't breathe the air here. I guess it's a perfect place to live, if you want to live on Mars. At some point I must have wanted to live on Mars, because here I am.

Story
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, survivor. This is his testament, an account of the journey that took him into the blazing desolation of the western deserts and into the labyrinths and caverns of the underworld.

This is the kind of book you always hope for when you open up that first page. This was the book I never knew I needed. A classic outside of the western culture bubble where I usually find my reading material. I was so glad that I had the opportunity to read this. This was a rarity. Exceptionally clever, thrilling, a single book exploding with enough ideas and ambition to rival even the longest fantasy series out there.

It's not bad
A bit unrealistic within the constraints set up, a little inconsistent, but mostly enjoyable. The author seems to aim for a somewhat sociorealistic feel, which somewhat falls apart with characters that can be a bit flat. There's a bit of zeerust to the novel too, even if you obey the premise setup in the first novel, but that's somewhat to be expected. Depending on how much sci-fi you've read, you might find this much more enjoyable than I did.

Science, drama and philosophy artfully combined.
I really enjoyed this book and and especially its philosophical leanings. I am knocking off 1 star because there was an incredibly clumsy set up for a key twist. thankfully the book continued to give more what you would expect from Cixin Liu. thought provoking with a real sense of veracity in the science. I am looking forward to the third part.

This is what science fiction should be. I loved every chapter of it. Marvellous improvement over the previous book, which was already great. The characters are much more well-written, the plot constantly keeps you on the edge, the scale progressively gets more enormous.

A tale full of wonder
One of the most captivating stories I've come across in 67 years. The narrator's style perfectly matched the strangeness of the narrative. The series lays bare the cold truth of life in the state of nature. And the contingency of much human feelings. As well as its constanvy. I'd better not say more.
