About this listen

The stunning first volume in Janny Wurts’s epic tale of two half-brothers cursed to life-long enmity, now re-released.

Let each who reads determine the good and the evil for himself

Athera is besieged by the Mistwraith, which blights the land and dims the mysteries guarded by the last fugitives of the old bloodlines.

But from a prophecy springs hope: the gifts of two brothers – one dark, one fair, raised on opposite sides of a relentless war – when paired may challenge the Mistwraith’s invasion, though at brutal cost…

Arithon, Master of Shadow, musician and mage, commands the power of illusion and darkness. Taken prisoner in battle, his fate falls to his half-brother, Prince Lysaer – a man endowed with the gift of light through the mother they share. Lysaer is the legitimate son of a king who was betrayed by his queen’s choice to father Arithon by his mortal enemy but that does not save him:

Vengeful fury drives the king to banish both Lysaer and Arithon from the world they know to the troubled realms of Athera beyond the Worldsend Gate.

The two exiles are thrown together by hatred and spilled blood – then bound by destiny to champion Athera’s sundered heritage.

The highest stakes ride the backlash of their conflict – they must reforge their adverse ideals into balance, or destroy the etheric grace of a culture all but lost to antiquity.

A subtle and intricate tale of morality and difference, justice versus compassion, told with epic scope and real magic, Curse of the Mistwraith remains a modern classic of the fantasy genre.

Fantastic story, was engrossed from the first sentence til the last. Can't wait for the rest of the series!

Very rich background and story telling

I've probably read Curse of the Mistwraith half a dozen times in the past three decades; I won't write what others have written elsewhere for newcomers. Instead, I want to focus on what Colin's narration gifts here, as this is a book whose prose, I now realise, was lying in wait to be spoken. Athera and it's foreshadowed triumph and tragedy, resting on a pair of half-brothers' shoulders, is so much clearer, and for that, emotively compelling. I wholeheartedly recommend this, for new and old.

Narration brings clarity to a rich fantasy, dense with theme

Can’t wait for the next volume to be released. It is like an ancient epic and draws you along.

Great story

I’m not going to compare this directly to other books, but I will say it’s on a level with the greats. So if you are looking for a classic fantasy novel to sink your teeth into, look no further.

The performance was high quality; it’s rare to have a narrator nail a wide range of characters with distinctive voices and accents but they delivered. On top of the diversity, the vocal tone was perfect for the material — somewhere between a bedtime story and a spellbinding yarn. The author’s pronunciation of the magical made-up words added a lot to their significance and I was enchanted all the way through.

The story centres around two brothers and of course the titular curse of the Mistwraith. Supporting characters play a significant role, and the author is not shy in presenting different character viewpoints to tell a complex and meaningful story. While there is some action, the meat of this novel is character development, revelations, and working with a deep magical system entwined with the fate of the world. I don’t know how to describe it really, but I found it absolutely captivating the whole way through. Not a wasted paragraph!

The magic system is also very intriguing, and you get to peek under the hood enough to begin to understand its capabilities and limitations without having it ‘spelled’ out for you (ha!). I found the elements of oracular combined with mystical particularly interesting.

In short, this profound and beautiful story about magic, personality, and destiny is well worth the read for anyone with a taste for quality classic fantasy.

Phenomenal classic fantasy
