The neurodiversity movement which values such human differences that were traditionally pathologized is gaining speed. Co-author Barb is a non-verbal autistic who is disguised as a poor thinker, because her body does not reliably respond to what her brilliant mind tells it. Publisher's Summary
"The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs Shears' house. It looked as if it was running on its side, the way dogs run when they think they are chasing a cat in a dream. But the dog was not running or asleep. The dog was dead. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog."
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a murder mystery novel like no other. The detective, and narrator, is Christopher Boone. Christopher is fifteen and has Asperger's, a form of autism. He knows a very great deal about maths and very little about human beings. He loves lists, patterns, and the truth. He hates the colours yellow and brown and being touched. He has never gone further than the end of the road on his own, but when he finds a neighbour's dog murdered he sets out on a terrifying journey which will turn his whole world upside down.
Please Note: this title starts at Chapter 2. The main character has a preference for prime numbers, so he numbers his chapters according to primes: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 etc.

Thought provoking perspectives
Writing about a child with autism would be hard, but writing a story about a child with autism from the child's point of view would be harder.
This is an amazing and insightful story with both heartwarming and confronting plots and scenes.
The delivery was impressive and the performance was memorable.

Great Book, Curious Narration
The book is great. The story well done. The narration? Not so much. Quality is good, but somewhere between the printed word and the audio, someone just didn't "get it." I suspect the author would be quite upset at the cringeworthy slip-ups in his story. For example, the main character, who lives with some sort of autistic spectrum disorder, says that he counts powers of two in his head to calm himself, and "got up to 33,554,432, which is two hundred and twenty-five." That was allowed, despite making no sense to either the narrator or the producer. What was no doubt written was "two to the power of twenty-five." Also, the chapters are all meant to be prime-numbered. How on Earth is there a Chapter 176 in the audio version, then? Another case of not "getting" it. If you want to hear a good story, but this lack of attention to detail would irritate you, just hold your breath and count to 32,768, which is 215.

Good book, dramatisation not fitting
If you could sum up The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Dramatised) in three words, what would they be?
This book is great, but sadly choice of narrator is debatable. Main character's 15 years old, while narrotor makes it sound as if he was 10, and it changes overall feel of the story.

Upsetting and disappointing
I selected this book to listen to as there was so much buzz about it, and I was embarrassed that I had not picked it up previously. Unfortunately, I absolutely hated this book. It started off fine, and at the beginning of the book, I did indeed find Christopher to be an engaging and somewhat charming character. But as the book went on, I became more horrified by Christopher. While I ached for him when he made himself physically ill over learning the truth of what happened to his mother, that was the end of any warm feelings towards him. The author seemed to escalate, revealing more and more horrible things about Christopher's actions and thoughts. There is absolutely nothing charming about a 15 year old lying down in a store screaming or threatening strangers in a tube station with a knife. And don't even get me started on his "favorite" dream where he describes only people like himself surviving a plague. The adults in the book are complete train wrecks - which does increase my sympathy for Christopher, but not enough to give him a pass on all the horrible habits, ticks, routines and absolute self absorption/lack of empathy he has for humans but is able to display for animals (if he can feel empathy for animals [which is a really, really good thing!], surely he can connect on some level with the people at school or in his neighborhood. I understand that Christopher is autistic and this would translate into rigidity in his thinking - I just feel that the author was disingenuous, although I cannot properly articulate why. I am really glad that other readers ultimately think that Christopher is endearing, honest, funny and lovable. I don't see it, but thank goodness they do! Library Journal (1May2003) states, "Rather than being just a victim, he is allowed to become a complex character who is not always likable and sometimes demonstrates menacing qualities that give this well-trod narrative path much-needed freshness". Perhaps that is my problem - I am focusing too much on the not always likable and menacing qualities, rather than acknowledging Christopher is a complex character. I have a huge problem with whoever chose Ben Tibber to narrate this book - Ben makes Christopher sound like a much younger child - not a teenager. This is unfair as it makes the listener forget that the bad behavior (example: screaming when he is told he can't take his Maths exam, etc) is coming from a teenager - not a young child.

A deep and moving story
This book is about much more than it seems at first blush. It’s both a heart wrenching and ultimately heartwarming tale about how different we are, and yet how much the same. It’s also about how we all strive to find our way (like the protagonist), often starting with a strong sense of where we are going, but then ending up someplace else. In the end, it’s the journey and the strength of the human spirit that matters. I recommend this book (which frankly I bought on a whim, and was much surprised by) for anyone who wants an engaging story, and who is ok with some occasional hard questions as it progresses. It’s very special.

An excellent book
I had this book recommended by a friend, although she had read it hard copy rather than the audio version. I was somewhat wary of the book to be honest as I have an autistic son, and wondered how exactly it would unfold, would it make those who suffer from autism sound like weirdos? Would it just caricature them? Instead what I got was a superb piece of writing which gives anyone who does not know someone who is autistic a view of the world they try to make sense of in a sensitive manner. The book isn't really there to explore autism but does give a perspective that non-sufferers can understand. I can identify with the characters that are well written and believable and I found myself really caring for the them and wanting things to work out, for my money the true mark of a writer is how good they are in creating engaging characters and I must admit I felt that Mark Haddon excels in this. Any audiobook is only as good as the narrator and I felt that Ben Tibber was first class. Thanks to both the author and narrator, I really enjoyed this book.

This book is one of those that starts you off slowly...almost turned it off at one point and gave up. What a great audiobook! And the dramatisation makes it come to life ? much better than just reading. The main character and narrator Christopher is a delightful creation and the supporting characters are all really well drawn. The book provides an absorbing and believable insight into the mind of a child with Asperger?s and helped me to understand a little more of the challenges of living with this condition and how family members cope. It is simultaneously heart-warming, witty and sad.

This was my first audiobook. It will be hard to beat though, the young reader made you relate to the vulnerability of the character 'Christopher'.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Unabridged)?
The way the story made listeners understand the difficulties that people with aspergers and those around them are affected.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes if I had time I would have listened all at once.
Any additional comments?
At first was sceptical with having a son with aspergers. A good friend recommended and so I bought this title. This was well put together and didn't humiliate persons with this condition but empathises and educates those with no or little understanding of ASD. I would recommend anyone to read/listen to this book. I thought the child that read the part of Christopher was a good choice and helped you realise the vulnerability and reminded you of his age. Excellent

Excellent audiobook- one big flaw
This is an absolutely fantastic audiobook. It is dramatised just enough to paint an incredibly realistic portrait of the events of the book, and mostly comprises of other actors playing the parts other than Christopher (the narrator) and minimal sound effects- creaking garden doors, car engines, train stations etc. all of which help bring the story to life without drawing attention away from the plot.
There is one massive problem I personally have, and that is that the voice actor for Christopher is a child of around 9-10. Since the character is supposed to be 15 this is incredibly jarring, particularly if this is the first time you have heard this story (as it was for me); it makes you think of the character in a different light than should be, making small things for a 15 year old seem huge and the more childish parts of his personality seem less of a concern. Again, this is find if you have read the book or seen the play, and is an interesting artistic choice, but distracts and confused more than it is worth.

Not what I expected
This book is really very interesting, I have an autistic grandson - and it is really fascinating to hear about the way that the autistic mind works. I recognised so much of this child's behaviour.
I find it fascinating that the author can be SO aware of this mindset, he must have close experience.
I do realise that there was no mention of autism in the novel, but it is apparent that this is the factor involved.

A great audiobook
Untill i started listening to the audiobook i had no idea what it was about. For the benefit of others I will say its a first person account of the thoughts of an autistic boy which are sotiimes amusing, sometimes surprising, sometimes totally insane- but always honestly potraying what it must be to suffer from such a socially disabling disease and its implications for his family and society. Where the book excels is the excellent full cast narration - you can feel the warmth and emotions of all the characters. There is some background music appropriate to the narration, its reasonably fast paced and leaves you with some basic human values to reflect on.

Beautifully produced. Wonderfully read by young Mark Haddon. Although much younger that the main character it communicates his moving innocence
