Story
Ava only left her daughter in the pushchair for five minutes. The buckle was fastened, and she was sure it was safe. But when she came downstairs, the door was open and Abi was gone - she walked down the road, past the Lovegoods' house, and was never seen again. A year later, the Lovegoods throw a housewarming party, showing off the results of their renovation. Ava doesn’t want to go. She can’t bear to look down that end of the road, to see the place where Abi vanished, and she doesn’t want to spend time with people who don’t share her grief.

Story
Bronny, a young Australian, finds herself down and out in London. She's a sweet girl who has spent her teenage years in a fearful, cautious bubble. She's never taken drugs, had sex or killed anyone. Within six weeks she's done all three. A group of backpackers break into an abandoned London townhouse seeking a rent-free life of debauchery. They don't realise someone's already there: A terrified woman bound and gagged in the basement. 'The Devil's Staircase' combines a chick-lit voice and a dark crime noir environment.

The Cry is a dark psychological thriller with a gripping moral dilemma at its heart and characters who will keep you guessing on every page.
Critic Reviews
"A book you find yourself greedily gulping down." ( Herald)
"The harrowing plot keeps you gripped until the final, devastating revelation." ( Sunday Mirror)" The Cry really is extraordinary. In a just universe, it will be [Helen FitzGerald's] Gone Girl moment. Read it at once." (Steve Mosby)
"Fitzgerald's punchy thriller fleshes out new circles of parental hell" ( Independent)
"Brilliant... 300 pages of taut, sharp, chilling and often laugh out loud funny genius." (Lisa Jewell)
"The way their world unravels is compelling and terrifyingly real. FitzGerald is a hugely underrated writer, but the initial success of The Cry looks set to put an end to that." (Big Issue Books of the Year)

Disturbing but riveting
I really enjoyed this story, I was never sure what the next turn of events would be. The narration was very good except for one tiny niggle - the pronunciation of Geelong and Melbourne, it is ‘Jelong’ and ‘Melbon’!

Great Beginning and Ending
This book had me hooked from the beginning and the ending was terrific. I enjoyed the main story of the mother and father of the missing child but was not as interested in the 'b' story of the ex-wife and child. However, overall I did enjoy the story and narration was very good.

Not a dark thriller on any level -disappointing
What was most disappointing about Helen Fitzgerald’s story?
This really never got going and the plot line was weak to say the least - I found the 'tweets' irritating and felt like abandoning it if I heard ' bobbly pops @bobbly pops' one more time. I listened on hoping there would be more of a twist - sadly not.
What about Lucy Paterson’s performance did you like?
On the upside it was well performed but that is unfortunately the only positive thing I can say.
What character would you cut from The Cry?
The tweets
The old lady - can't even remember her name to be honest this just wasn't for me - it was sold as a dark psychological thriller that would leave you wanting more and I just could nt wait for it to end a poor plot.
Any additional comments?
I rarely leave reviews but felt I had to in this case as when it ended I thought oh? Is that it?? But to be honest I was surprised I d persevered. It may appeal to some but not to me sadly

Disappointing plot and ending
I listened to the full book, mainly to find out if the story was going to get any better. Disappointing plot and main male character was not engaging. Felt that main gist of the story should have been brought to a conclusion - ie Noah. Don’t waste 7 hours of your life listening to this.

Spoilt by an thin ending
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and liked the structure of it and how it teased about what was to come later. However, the eventual ‘later’ didn’t materialise. I couldn’t believe the story had actually ended as it came way too soon and without resolution of a lot of issues. But ..... it was well narrated and although I’m bitterly disappointed with the ending, I really enjoyed the story up until that point. Still worth a listen.

Don’t often write a review but this book was excellent. Gripped me from the start. Wouldn’t usually want to read a book about such a gruelling topic but it was so well written, it was brilliant. Great characters & feel sad not to hear what will become of Joanna now the story has ended. Fantastic narration on Audible. Lucy Paterson was superb. Read it!!

Strong start, weak ending.
The book started well, a great pace, good story however failed to deliver as the story went on. It felt like the author had a really great premise for a very good thriller but was unable to deliver the depth required to make this the unforgettable thriller that was promised. Felt disappointed with the conclusion of the book, however it’s isn’t the worst audiobook that I have listened to. The narrator was very good and I enjoyed her performance. I got this free with the latest buy one get one free deal, or I would have considered returning it unfortunately.
