Publisher's Summary

It was supposed to be simple. Marry the tall Texan. Her children get a father. They save the ranch. A business transaction, nothing more. She definitely wasn’t going to fall in love. After her husband ran off with her little sister, she was no longer susceptible to cowboy charm.

Except, the North Dakota girl had never met a Texas cowboy. He married her for the ranch. A former champion bull rider needs a spread to call home, even if it is in North Dakota. Even if it comes with four little kids. And a big, black, slobbering dog. Especially if it comes with a woman with enough sweetness and enough toughness to rope his heart and heal it.

The cowboy’s not afraid of anything, except losing his heart again.

Story Perfection

This is one of my favorite Jessie Gussman novels, and hearing it narrated by Jay Dyess is like frosting on an exquisite cake. Gussman writes the best love stories. She has a knack for describing scenes and character nuances that bring the story to life and stir similar emotions in her readers. Dyess brings Gussman’s stories to life. I loved the Texas drawl of the MMC, and the gleeful voices of the MFC’s children. Dyess has a way of pulling his listeners into the story without drawing undue attention to himself and distracting from the experience. It’s like he becomes the story.

No spark in the romance

The worst thing ever in a romance novel is when there's no romance. It was difficult to keep pushing myself to get through this book. The romance didn't bud until near the end. I felt the first two hours was just going over and over the same thing trying too hard to convince the reader that she was homely and he was a champion bull rider. Then there's the whole storyline of she's got to get married so she can inherit when she was already married and had four kids. That didn't make any sense. The narrator wasn't my favorite. At most times he was reading sentences and was mechanical. But I think it had more to do with the flow of the writing. It left me with no desire to purchase any other in this series.

Finding love

I really liked how even getting married for money both agreed that they were in for the long haul. The way they worked thru problems to keep the ranch when the money was not received showed strength of character. Love grew and both was afraid to tell the other. The voice of Mr. D was very soothing

Marriage for Money and a Ranch

I didn’t like Rem at first. He came off as closed off and only wanted to marry Elaine for the ranch she had and the money she would inherit after they married. He didn’t want to care about her or her four children. But living with her and seeing all the hardships she went through and her strength in dealing with it all softened him towards her and the children until they crept into his heart. I couldn’t believe that the townspeople would blame her for her husband cheating on her with her sister and leaving her to raise four children alone. Her ex and her sister were selfish and self-centered. I’m glad Rem came to see that she was a diamond in the rough. I loved the narrator who had a smooth rhythm to his reading with nice and funny inflections and he sounded like a natural cowboy with his accent.

This Gentleman, Cowboy will wrangle your heart.

Rem is a gentleman, Texas cowboy. Though being famous, tall, dark, and handsome; Rem has been hurt worse by a woman than he ever was while on the rodeo circuit. Elaine was abandoned by her husband...for her sister. Pregnant and left alone to raise her kids on a failing ranch, Elaine has spent the last few years exhausted and barely holding on. When these two strangers roll the dice on a marriage of convenience, trust in God’s loving hands to provide is the one commodity that they both rely on. Can they find trust and maybe something more with each other? Clean and full of romance.

Great Escapism

Love this North Dakota clean romance. What an improbable scenario! She gets a billion dollars, if she gets married in 6 months. He gets to share it, but also has to move to North Dakota (and stay there), marry her and "inherit" the four kids, worn down house and crazy dog. Yet, it all seems probably by the first chapter. Great writing. Great narration. You'll come to love the characters and be glad to see them through future books.

Recommended

This couple more than most deserve one another. Hard worker and driven doesn't come close to what they individually and together are willing to do for what is needed. I hope we get to see how they get along with everything.
