About this listen

The extraordinary story of the heroic doctor whose courage and leadership were a lifeline for thousands of Australian prisoners-of-war on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway of World War II - brilliantly told by Australia's favourite storyteller, Peter FitzSimons

In September 1939, young Australian surgeon Edward 'Weary' Dunlop was working in London when the dogs of war were unleashed. Signing up, he was commissioned a captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) and sent to the Middle East, serving in Palestine, Greece, Crete, Egypt and Tobruk.

As the European war dragged on, an emboldened Japanese force captured Singapore and marched closer to Australian shores. Weary and over 3000 others sailed back to Java to fight this new enemy. At the No. 1 Allied General Hospital in Bandoeng, the Japanese were ready to murder the bedridden when Weary put his body in front of the bayonets. From that moment his leadership, ingenuity and selflessness became legend as Allied prisoners-of-war were sent to Singapore, Thailand and finally faced the hell of working as slave labour on the infamous Thai-Burma Railway. In the POW camps, tropical diseases, malnutrition, and the brutal work regime imposed by their Japanese captors meant the death toll was horrific. And yet, with little to no medical supplies, under extreme physical pressure, Weary Dunlop took risks and beatings to defy the Japanese and keep his men alive in circumstances that tested the limits of human endurance.

Weary was a gentle giant of a man. A boxer and former Wallaby, he could have been an elite sportsman but chose a different path - one that led him from rural Victoria to training as a pharmacist and then to medical school. World War II was the fire that fuelled this remarkable hero. His courageous leadership and calm endurance became beacons of hope to the POWs under his command. His name has become synonymous with courage, compassion and resilience. Now, Weary Dunlop's heroic and inspiring story has been brought to life by Australia's greatest storyteller, Peter FitzSimons.

I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face full of pride for our brave diggers who went through unimaginable atrocities. Weary Dunlop deserved every praise he ever received and then some. What a fantastic story of his life.
We will remember them.

I absolutely loved this biography of Weary Dunlop. I started listening 3 days ago and have continued to listen whenever I could.
I have always had a particular interest in Weary and the plight of the Australian PoWs in Changi and the Thai Burma Railway.
This biography brings Weary to life as a man and is a detailed narrative of what the POWs suffered in captivity. I enjoyed Fitzsimons narrative with its distinctly Australian vernacular. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in Australian history and the heroism of individuals who selflessly can change the lives of others.
Thank you for writing this book, Peter.

Bringing Weary to life for a new generation.

Another great work from Peter Fitzsimmons, meticulously researched to fully engage the reader in Weary’s life. On a personal note, this superb man saved my great-grandfathers leg from an ulcer on the railway. My family and I will forever be grateful to you weary! A lighthouse of sanity in a universe of madness and suffering indeed!

Grateful to an incredible man.

Peter’s story about Weary Dunlop was an amazing and inspiring story, it just goes to show that after the atrocities Weary and our Diggers suffered they were great humanitarians, I am still amazed that the Japanese were not punished more at wars end. God knows they deserved to be.
Lest We Forget.

Inspiring to the utmost.

Heartbreaking. Courageous. Infuriating. Enlightening. Inspirational. This was so difficult to read at times (immersive with author narrating) as I kept putting my grandfather in the story. How a movie hasn't been made yet about this man is beyond me! Set during WW2 in both arenas and covering over 8 years of war, it speaks to the endurance men and women have under many painful situations that they had no idea would end, other than a hope and belief to be saved. There were episodes that made me reflect on today's generation not fully comprehending just what life was like. One example was the awful cholera outbreak, which made me think that the only thing to give us any idea what it was like was Covid. FitzSimons has created an informative, solid piece of work which, I hope becomes a key item on everyone's TBR. 👏🩵🔥

Man's ability to endure with a semblance of courage and humanity intact.
