Publisher's Summary

"The Count of Monte Cristo" (French: "Le Comte de Monte-Cristo") is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It is often considered, along with "The Three Musketeers", as Dumas' most popular work. It is also among the highest selling books of all time. The writing of the work was completed in 1844. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from the plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet.

The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815-1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. It is primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, forgiveness and death, and is told in the style of an adventure story.

Bad production

Story is good but the production is shocking.
You can hear the bloke turning the pages of the book he’s reading in what sounds like a large empty room. Some editing is definitely required for this audiobook

Best Book of All Time

What more can I say? It's the best book I have read. Very long, but even so, I was sad to see it end. Performance was excellent. The audio in some chapters had a hollow quality but for me that slight annoyance was easy to forget, especially at this absurdly low price. If there is a better book written I can't wait to find it.

Quality equipment is a must

The actor is decent, but the recording makes him sound like he is recording on his phone on speaker.

Can’t beat the price!

I believe you can get this narration for free from Librivox. Anyway, the story is first rate. The narration is first rate. The audio quality is poor. That is what you get for free. There are sounds in the background, traffic, phones, doors opening and closing. However, the story and narration are enough to draw you in, so it isn’t so bothersome.

Poor audio

As others have pointed out there are plenty of audio surprises such as something that sounds like birds, the turning of pages and the sound of coughing and clearing of throats. For the money, I can't complain too much. These distractions are more of a " what's that this time? "

spotty audio quality/good performance

The audio quality is spotty. And you will sometimes hear cars driving by, kittens meowing and occasionally cell phones going off. but then again the audio book is almost given away for free. if you find the disturbances intolerable then this is not for you.

This is a Librivox recording! Stop complaining.

If you do not know, Librivox has voluteers record books from the public domain.

You can listen for free on their site, or enjoy the convenience of having it in your audible app for a few cents. Your choice. The audio is not great and neither is the performance the accents don't always match, but this person did this FOR FREE so people who can't afford Audible have access to free audiobooks.

Bottom line, this book is always worth a listen it is a masterpiece. If you have a spare credit, the John Lee recording is excellent.

file crashes late on book

wasted hours of my life listening to this book only for it yo crash late on. Thee narrator was good but some of back ground sounds such as planes lawnmowers, cars ambulances to not really fit the context of the book.

Fascinating read and vividly relayed

I don't why I had previously resisted this classic tale, however I was totally surprised at the turn in the story and how revenge was being regretted by the Count as it's impact was more than he humanly expected.

The reader's pace was just right and very well delivered and made this very long story very enjoyable

‘Ello, ‘Ello

I started listening to this audiobook but when the narrator spoke the words of the characters in a faux French accent I couldn’t help but think of ‘Ello, ‘Ello (if you’re not British then do a search on YouTube)
