Story
It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress. Something blue. I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.” Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true. The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most romantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there.

My resignation letter was rejected by my boss with his sexy, trademark smirk and an "I highly suggest you read the fine print of your contract...." So, I did. And now I've realized that unless I fake my death, poison him, or find a way to renegotiate my impossible contract, I'm stuck working under one of the cockiest and most ruthless bosses in New York. Then again, I thought that was the case until he called me late last night with an emergency proposition....

Meeting Beth Harrison in the first-class cabin of my flight from Chicago to London throws me for a loop, and everything I know about myself and women goes out the window. Story
I believe in love. It just doesn’t believe in me. I date. I’m all for giving guys a chance. I’ve just never met the one. Until on a spring morning in the English countryside, a tall, dark stranger emerges from the mist. Logan Steele is all tousled hair, hard chest, and lips so perfect I want to reach out and touch them, just to check they’re real. Did I mention he’s an Earl with a self-made fortune? But when I find out Logan Steele is out to destroy everything I’ve dedicated my life to protect, the chemistry disappears and the hope that had blossomed my chest turns to rage.

Story
Bennett Fox walked into my life on one hell of a crappy Monday morning. I was late for the first day at my new job - a job I’d now have to compete for, even though I’d already worked eight years to earn it, because of an unexpected merger. While I lugged my belongings up to my new office, a meter maid wrote me a parking summons. She’d ticketed a long line of cars - except for the Audi parked in front of me, which happened to be the same make and model as mine. Annoyed, I decided to regift my ticket to the car that had evaded a fine.

Dirty rich one night stand. That's all it was supposed to be. He's the powerful attorney, now world-renowned after coming off the trial of a century which was publicized across the country. And I'm one of the reporters that sat in his courtroom. I watched him, studied him, got to know him from afar which isn't hard since I know his exact brand of confidence, arrogance, and wealth. I know his type. I've dated his type. Which is why when I happen to come face to face with him, when sparks fly and heat simmers between us, I know what happens if I say yes to Reese Summer.

It was just a typical Monday. Until the big boss asked me to make the pitch for a prospective new client. After two years on shaky ground at work because of my screw up, an opportunity to impress the senior partners was just what I needed. Or so I thought, until I walked into the conference room and collided with the man I was supposed to pitch to. My coffee spilled, my files tumbled to the ground, and I almost lost my balance. And that was the good part of my day. Because the gorgeous man who crouched down and looked at me like he wanted to eat me alive was none other than my ex.

The first time I met Chase Parker, I didn't exactly make a good impression. I was hiding in the bathroom hallway of a restaurant, leaving a message for my best friend to save me from my awful date. He overheard and told me I was a bitch, then proceeded to offer me some dating advice. So I told him to mind his own damn business and went back to my miserable date. I couldn't help but sneak hidden glances at the condescending jerk on the other side of the room. Of course, he caught me on more than one occasion, and winked.

I met Bianca in an elevator. She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck. The beautiful raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed. She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she'd dubbed "Mister Moneybags" - her afternoon appointment. Bianca told me how much she hated Dex's type - snobby, over-educated, silver-spooned men who didn't appreciate the simple things in life.

Ten years ago, Whitney Gable caught me off guard with her long legs and grab-you-by-the-balls blue eyes. I didn't know or care what her name was. Like any Riscoff worth the family name, I went after what I wanted. We burned like a flash fire until she married another man. She hates me, and she should. I objected on her wedding day. Now she's home, with those same long legs and man-eater stare, but there's no ring on her finger. They say a Riscoff and a Gable can never live happily ever after, but I'm not done with Whitney Gable.

DifficultTo get into

Publisher's Summary
A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That's the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and has no desire to change his ways.
Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss. Until the day he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract-fiancée instead of PA.
What happens when two people who loathe each other have to live together and act as though they are madly in love? Sparks. That's what happens.
Can the power of love really change a person?
Will they survive the contract?
What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can't live without?

The Arrogance
Well...I really enjoyed the plot to the story,I fully expected your typical "assistant/boss"office hook up,but had a different twist than your usual romance. For starters...The assistant was not your"usual"gorgeous, lusty looking assistant, according to her boss(a major a$$ hole,in my opinion)she was a plain, sexless scare crow.He treated her like total $h!t for a good portion of the story and she put up with it because her situation called for her needing her job.In the "hero's"arrogance,he didn't get his promotion so he devised a plan to fix his image with the help of his straight, laced assistant. They worked it out and of course ended up falling in love.A little hard to believe but it happened none the less.If this had some"reality"to it,I'd see a divorce in their future.I think his guilt over how he treated her made him settle and his personality will certainly rear it's ugly head soon,it's not likely to change after all the years of being such a d!ck.

Typical HEA love story
I am always hesitant to write reviews for books that are what I consider "par for the course" romances. I just give my honest opinion of the read and I don't have blogs or web sites or anything of that nature. I am just me and I like to read and listen.
This story was interesting enough to finish. It was not a story I could not put down or kept me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next. The publishers summary give a good synopsis of the book. What IS refreshing about the story line however, is the company that Richard goes to is an extremely close knit family oriented business. I think that was unique to the story. I also enjoyed how the people from said company helped the story along. The sub characters were interesting and I hope that she decides to publish their stories as well.
This is a story you can enjoy on a weekend, vacation or just to have something pleasant to listen to. If you have read my reviews before you know that I am a HUGE fan of Tatiana Sokolov. This story is atypical of what she usually narrates. She does a very good performance, but the male performer has more to read and his female voice took some getting used to.
I used a credit to purchase this because I was down on reading/listening material. I would recommend for a sale.

Real!!!
It's rare when I feel so emotional with a book these days, normally many romance novels are repetitive always about tragedy, but this book was real. And the author was able to express how one person can change and make a difference with unconditional love.

Where to start....
Here's the thing, it's so TOTALLY unrealistic that I found it difficult to finish. Please don't get me wrong, I am all for escaping reality, but this story was just too much to swallow. The male characters thoughts and revelations are so not in character that I lost interest. As far as the naration, it was good, just good. I think John Lane would have been an easier listen if the dialogue was written for a mans voice, but not to be. I imagined Mr. Lane rolling his eyes at what he was reading.

Formal, stiff dialogue
What disappointed you about The Contract?
I couldn't finish this story because the dialogue was so formal and unnatural that I just couldn't get past it. It seemed like two characters from a historical novel were placed in a modern setting. Even the rest of the writing was pretty stilted in general.
What could Melanie Moreland have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Young, modern characters should speak more informally, in the vernacular. No young, male advertising executive would think to himself, "I needed to show some affinity with Katherine. I hoped she would respond in kind."
How could the performance have been better?
Given the writing style of this story, I'm sure it was a challenge for the narrators. But, the "pretend fiancé" is such an overdone trope I think the narrators could've found a way to emote a bit more to make it a little more believable. John Lane came across as a little wooden and out of touch with the male character.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
My initial curiosity in the story along with the excellent rating made me stick it out for the first two and a half hours until eventually my disbelief and impatience finally won out.

Loved the book, but loved the audio more!
I bought the book when it was first released as it was by one of my go-to authors (I've been a big fan of Melanie's for years) and wasn't disappointed.
So when I found out the audio version had been released I just HAD to get it and I loved it more than the book, John Lane & Tatiana Sokolov did a great job of bringing the book to life and I was emotionally invested (again) from the very start.
This is definitely an audiobook that I will listen to many more times.

I loved it
A true heart warming romance. The narrative was a pick at the personages thoughts.

terrible narration
male narration voice trying to mimmick female voice and vice versa was cringe worthy. Foul language unnecessary. Characters not very believable. Weak story.

Story moved along at a good pace, great narrators
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, the narrators were very good, the story held my attention and it was just the right length with enough detail to keep me interested
Who was your favorite character and why?
Both Richard and Katherine were good characters but there was a solid supporting cast of characters
What does John Lane and Tatiana Sokolov bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
They are excellent narrators who have a good range of tone and intonation
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes if I had the chance
Any additional comments?
This was the first book by Melanie Moreland that I have listened to, it will not be the last

A story to make time goes by during commute
It is predictable story but cool to listen to. ...some funny exchanges between the protagonists. Not great but not bad either.
