Stephen Munro, a demobbed army officer, reconciles himself to taking a job as a footman to make ends meet. Employed at Wintringham Hall, the delightful but decaying Sussex country residence of the elderly Lady Susan Carey, his first task entails welcoming her eccentric guests to a weekend house-party, at which her bombastic nephew—who recognises Stephen from his former life—decides that an after-dinner séance would be more entertaining than bridge. Then Cicely disappears!

Story
A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Story
It’s 2006, and terror scaremongering in the media has rattled the residents of sleepy, suburban Dunlop Crescent. When a Maori family moves into number 14, the local cranks assume they are Middle Eastern terrorists hell-bent on destroying the Australian way of life. Rumour has it that they plan to turn their house to face Mecca. This sets off an extraordinary chain of events that embroils the entire neighbourhood as well as cynical media figures, bumbling antiterrorist police and a gang of white supremacists with a radical plan to wake up the country and ‘preserve Australian values’.

Publisher's Summary
England, 2020.
There are 1.2 million human-sized rabbits living in the UK.
They can walk, talk and drive cars, the result of an Inexplicable Anthropomorphising Event 55 years ago.
And a family of rabbits is about to move into Much Hemlock, a cosy little village where life revolves around summer fetes, jam-making, gossipy corner stores and the oh-so-important Best Kept Village awards.
No sooner have the rabbits arrived than the villagers decide they must depart. But Mrs Constance Rabbit is made of sterner stuff and her family are behind her. Unusually, so are their neighbours, long-time residents Peter Knox and his daughter Pippa, who soon find that you can be a friend to rabbits or humans, but not both.
With a blossoming romance, acute cultural differences, enforced rehoming to a MegaWarren in Wales and the full power of the ruling United Kingdom Anti Rabbit Party against them, Peter and Pippa are about to question everything they'd ever thought about their friends, their nation and their species.
It'll take a rabbit to teach a human humanity....

Absorbing listen, fantastically narrated.
I stumbled upon this surreal story and was sold by a pointed but hard-to-resist review that said 'if this is not your usual type, give it a try; you won't be disappointed'. Sure enough, I was soon hooked.
The first class narration really is the making of this audiobook! A superb performance with clear voices and characterisation that really lends itself to the dry wit and clever storytelling of the novel.
The tale itself had me both snorting with laughter and cringing at the parallels you can draw with real world scenarios.
I will seek out both the author and the narrator again.

Witty, whimsical, wonderful
Excellent and very enjoyable story, marred briefly by truly bizarre pronunciation of ‘Goulburn’ and an awful attempt at an Australian accent. Dear audiobook performers, just… don’t. Otherwise great.

another well-built premise
Another well-built world: like Thursday Next and Early Riser, it left me wanting me wanting more. I'd love to hear more of this Rabbit-y world. JF has amazing talent. And beautifully read!

Terrific narration, superb story
Jasper Fforde has written a clever, entertaining, hilarious, poignant and touching allegory of the human condition. His wit and surreal world building was absorbing. I will be listening and reading again and again.
Andrew Wincott’s narration is supple and delicate, a joy to listen to and just perfect for the story.

Rabbits.
First time I've listened to a Fforde audio book. I think I appreciate his work more when I read the written words. I especially wasn't sold on the voice styling for Constance Rabbit. Overall, an interesting tale of an alternate world which has lessons & messages for us all. A surprising ending as well!!
