Story
The life of a Bomb Girl isn't usually glamourous. But Maggie is getting married, so she is going to make sure her wedding day is - even if she does have to spend every other day slaving on the factory floor. This blasted factory was not what Julia had in mind either. She had always dreamed of attending Oxford University rather than getting her hands dirty, and the easy laughter of the other women intimidates her terribly. But they are all here together in this munitions factory in a Lancashire mill town, sharing firsts, pitching in and getting on. These Bomb Girls are going to do their best at work and in love.

Story
Rachel Smedling is not like the other women in her isolated Pennine village: she is taller, stronger, and weaves cloth like a man. Without her, the household would fall apart, for her mother is ailing and her vicious drunkard father seems to hate her so much, he would happily offer money to any man who would wed her. When her mother dies, Rachel is at the mercy of her increasingly violent father. Her only escape is by marrying a kindly man with whom she finds happiness, if not passion, and her life begins to seem complete.

A bit misleading
Not a bad story - corny at times. I was a little disappointed because I thought it would be about the role of women in code breaking during the war. Not a thing. Was really the story of the cooks - more about recipes.

Reminiscent of Enid Blyton
Far too jolly and perfect for my taste. Everyone is handsome or beautiful and the hardships of war were unrealistically described. I kept thinking I was listening to a grown up version of Famous Five...

Not As Good As Promised
I was looking forward to reading this as the story sounded interesting. Instead it was saccharin coated story of four girls, not code girls as I expected, who land up working in the kitchen as cooks below stairs. Everything was so predictable and sugary with each falling in love at the same time. The narration was the only thing that kept me listening. Brilliantly done. Shame the story can’t do her justice.

The CODE girls?
I love Daisy Styles books and usually enjoy every one I read. I cannot say that I did not enjoy this book as I found it a pleasant read BUT I felt the story was more a "WW2 Upstairs Downstairs" than a book about actual code girls. As mentioned in another review, I found the story to be more "Enid Blyton" than Daisy Styles with the emphasis on work downstairs in the kitchens rather than code breaking. I am disappointed as I was looking forward to reading a novel based around the code girls actual work but sadly this novel barely mentioned the code breaking of WW2.
The book was beautifully narrated by Anne Dover who as usual can make even the most boring novels sound exciting, therefore it was worth buying for that alone. As a novel it is very similar to Daisy Styles other WW2 books with very little changes. Overall a pleasant read but not one of her best efforts.

Too sweet
I think there were anachronisms throughout the story.
The use of the word scumbag is one that jarred.
The ending was predictable.
The principal characters were too good to be true for my taste so I will avoid this author in future.
