Publisher's Summary

The Chrysalids is set in the future after a devastating global nuclear war. David, the young hero of the novel, lives in a tight-knit community of religious and genetic fundamentalists, always on the alert for any deviation from the norm of God's creation.

Abnormal plants are publicly burned, with much singing of hymns. Abnormal humans (who are not really human) are also condemned to destruction - unless they succeed in fleeing to the Fringes, that Wild Country where, as the authorities say, nothing is reliable and the devil does his work.

David grows up ringed by admonitions: KEEP PURE THE STOCK OF THE LORD; WATCH THOU FOR THE MUTANT.

At first he does not question. Then, however, he realizes that he, too, is out of the ordinary, in possession of a power that could doom him to death or introduce him to a new, hitherto unimagined world of freedom.

The Chrysalids is a perfectly conceived and constructed work from the classic era of science fiction, a Voltairean philosophical tale that has as much resonance in our own day, when religious and scientific dogmatism are both on the march, as when it was written during the Cold War.

vive la difference...

A classic John Wyndham story of post apocalyptic survival and life amongst peoples with unexplainable difference..

Differences physical, mental and moral..

Bigotry gone mad...

My favourite book as a child

Is still my favourite book as an adult, bought to life in this recording. They really should make a film.

Engrossing

Loved this book, imaginative and scarily relevant to today’s political and religious state where intolerance and fear of difference are barely hidden, if at all. Ends with hope in a way.

A compelling story with great insight.

I read this as a young man and loved returning to it.
Ever so insightful and expertly executed as a novel and we'll presented as an audio book.

A post apocalyptic novel well worth your time

What did you like most about The Chrysalids?

I really enjoyed this book. I've also "read" the Day of the Triffids (same author) which got me in the post apocalyptic reading in the first place. But here you get in to a world where the apocalypse lies far back and what could happen if people have forgotten what we know today. Of course there is a twist.
The narrator executed his craft flawlessly and it was hard for me to stop listening in the evening.
If you liked this book, maybe you should read "Childhood's end" from Arthur C. Clarke as well. Great stuff!

Great performance of a classic story

I was absolutely captivated by this audiobook. The reader though initially sounding dry is infact a wonderful performer who truly brings the story to life. I highly recommend.

This is such a classic novel and I am glad the audiobook measured up. My husband had never read the book and found the audiobook very easy to follow.

This is how a post apocalyptic story should go

I'm not a huge fan of post apocalyptic stories, they tend to have too much in common. This said i must say i liked this one. In the style how its written you can feel its from 50 years ago and that can get a little annoying. i started reading this because i loved some of this writers other work and I don't regret it.

Creepy, thought-provoking, classic Wyndham

This might just be my favourite Wyndham novel (they're all excellent) and whilst I do partially agree with some criticisms of the ending, that doesn't spoil it for me and even if it did, I'd recommend it for the first three quarters alone. Give it a go. If you enjoyed Wyndham's other works (especially Chocky and The Midwich Cuckoos) then you'll enjoy this.

Fearing for the end I nearly missed a great book!

At first I blanched at listening to the story. I could remember only the first few chapters and dared not to go on as it seemed so hopeless. I didn’t want to go there. I didn’t want the people to suffer as I felt was inevitable. You see my memory is faulty. I can read a book over and over, shutting out some of the memories, enabling fresh stories. But I did recall some of it. Very well written, I can promise it’s worth listening to. I hope I will remember how much I enjoyed it next time. This time I could not put it down! I listened until the end.

great book Wyndham at his best.

first came across this book many years ago in literature classes. so great to be reminded of this. although many know this author for the day of the triphids, this book far outshines that.

wonderful book, excellent performance

Really enjoyed this. Having read the book many times, it took an hour or so for me to settle into an adult retelling a story written initially from a child's perspective. Once I was past that, though, I savoured every moment of Graeme Malcolm's note perfect performance. I will be seeking out more of his performances.
