Publisher's Summary

St Angelus runs like a family: the workers take care of their own - a lesson the mysterious new assistant matron, Miss Van Gilder, is about to learn the hard way.

Little Joe has had trouble breathing but the doctors don’t take his sister Lily’s concerns seriously, least of all Miss Van Gilder. The nurses of Lovely Lane have a secret which is dividing their close knit group and when Nurse Pammy Tanner once again breaks the rules, her actions threaten them all.

Realistic storyline and brilliantly read

I absolutely adored this book. What a smashing writer Nadine is. The characters were real to me and the narration was realistically done. It broke my heart in parts.

Heartwarming, heartbreaking.

Nadine Dorries and Georgia Macguire draw you expertly into the heart of the community of the slums of Liverpool after the war. The characters are warm, caring, loving - sharing what little they have with those in need.

The hospital community, by contrast, on the surface is much more regimented and disciplined - but underneath beats a warm, caring, loving heart.

This story, told through the eyes of Lily and her family, the gentle nurses, the affluent, arrogant Amy and the lovely Lockey tells of loyalty, love and loss. On more than one occasion, I could not stop the tears from rolling down my face, I was there with them all.

The intricate, but beautiful 'love dances' that grew and developed throughout the story were sweet and - for the most part - innocent. The underlying deceit weaving its way through the story, kept me asking myself where this was going - didn't expect that!!

I was so disappointed when I finished this book as I thought it would be a long time until the next one comes out. Imagine my excitement when looking through audible for another of Nadine's books (I have 'read' them all), to find that The Mothers of Lovely Lane is out. Needless to say, I have already downloaded it - can't wait 🤗.

Enjoyable reading a slice of early NHS life and poverty in the 1950s

A really enthralling story line , not quite as much about hospital life as Book One in the series , but a vivid picture of Liverpool and pen pictures of many colourful characters . Some pieces of the plot fell a bit too easily into place to be totally credible , but a nice warm and comfortable ending .

As good as book 1

Loved this very human story of what life was like for many people in inner cities in the early 1950s.

emotional rollercoaster

this book is really brought to life by the excellent narrator. The story continues from the first book, introducing new characters. Interesting description of the birth of the nhs and post war liverpool.

Way too long

Although I really enjoyed the first in this series I felt this story was way too long at nearly 17 hours and would have been much more enjoyable as an abridged version. Halfway through I was getting tired of hearing yet another cup of tea being made, in my opinion unnecessary padding to compensate for a weak storyline. Brilliant narration which brought it all to life, but not much of a plot and what there was seemed rather predictable.

As good as the first book

Excellent continuation of the story. New characters are introduced and focused on but old faces are cleverly weaved into the story to keep you updated on their continuing story. Fab narration brings the story alive - what an array of accents and voices! Bought the next book straight away.

Highly recommended this book

Loved this book, second one I've listened to in the Lovely Lane series. I'm going to purchase book 3 as I didn't want it to finish. The story is really interesting, from when the NHS started in hospitals and the rules and regulations for nurses in the 1940's, amazing! Georgia Maguire is a great narrator, great accents for various characters could listen to her all day.
