A great fairy tale collection

The Glass Mermaid
3 stars - I liked it

TW: Death of family and friends due to disease, Cancer

On the shore of Lake Erie, Kate is the last of her kind and spends her days hunting beach glass for jewelry. She has resigned herself to dying alone, until she meets Cooper, who also has a secret.

This was a surprisingly heartbreaking story for such a short story. The story takes place over just a few days so it is a very quick instant love romance. Kate has lived 300 years with the guilt of not being able to save her family. She is slowly losing her mermaid charm and will die soon. Cooper is struggling to cope with the end of his life. He has so much he wants to do but knows it will never happen. They both get a second chance at life though in the end.

This was told in dual POV which really helped sell both of their feelings on each other, as well as their guilt and grief about what has happened to them. For how short this story was, it held a lot of impact. Hollie Jackson also did a great job at narrating this story and portraying the different characters. She was able to portray the emotions to go along with the story which really sold it for me.

The Cupcake Witch
3 stars - I liked it

Julie has only one love and that is baking. When she inherits a cute little cottage called Serendipity Gardens she decides it's time to open a bakery/ tea shop and live her dream. If the local land baron’s son doesn’t ruin it.

This was a very sweet and short story. Julie and Horatio both recently lost their mothers and are struggling to get past the loss. Julie realizes that she needs to follow her dream and inheriting a cottage from a distant relative comes at just the right time. Horatio is struggling to deal with his fathers constant disappointment and anger. Meeting Julie pushes him to confront his father and pursue his true passion.

This is an instant love story so there isn’t a lot of build up in their relationship. I still really enjoyed the book though. Julie and Horatio were cute characters who were brought together at the right times. I also liked the townsfolk a lot. They were quirky and fun.

The narrator, Hollie Jackson, did an amazing job with the narration of this book. Each character had their own voice, as it was, and their emotions were portrayed perfectly. Overall, a good short novella set in Chancellor.

The Fairy Godfather
3 stars - I liked it

Rayne, a fairy godfather, is struggling to help Alice, the owner of the local bagel shop, find her Prince Charming. Unfortunately, he keeps being distracted by his best friend's sister.

This was a cute story. I really enjoyed Rayne and Viola’s relationship. Rayne was a very interesting fae. He was a fairy godfather, which I love that this is a thing, but also a beekeeper. He has a strong affinity with any flying insect and can communicate with them. Basically, he was a fascinating and unique character who I instantly liked.

Viola is from the local land baron family but she isn’t a spoiled rich girl. She works hard and is determined to have her own life. I really like that she doesn’t put her dream of being a perfumer creator off just because she starts a relationship with Rayne. Also I loved how supportive he was of her decisions and doesn’t try to hold her back.

I also liked that we got to see previous couples in this series again. It was nice to check in on the couples and see how their lives have changed or will be changing. Overall, this was a cute story and the narrator did a great job at bringing it, and the characters, to life.

Fabulous Fairytales

This is such a fun read. Loosely based on common fairytales these stories are delightful with relatable characters and detailed world building. I loved the mixture of magic and real life. The narrator was fantastic at bringing the story and characters to life. I look forward to more in this series & from this author

I love Fairytales

I adore reading fairytales and love to find a read retellings of my favorites. Melanie has to be one of my favorite authors that does modern fairytales with her own nod to the originals.

A wonderful Fairy Tale series.

Reviewer: Teresa Fallen Angel

Summary:
This was wondrous trip to the town of Chancellor where nothing is quite what it appears.

For those who love any of the myths about mermaids, The Glass Mermaid brings a new twist to the Tale. I loved how Julie lived in the town and no one had a clue about what she was. She was alone in the world without anyone to ground her until she met a man who could change everything.

In The Cupcake Witch, it was fascinating how the town had a history of having witches, but no one knew the truth until Kate arrived to see the home that was left to her family. There is more to the gift than meets the eye, but you will have to read this to find out.

The last story, The Fairy Godfather, brought many of the earlier characters together as he worked to fulfill his obligations to his person. Along the way he may find what he didn’t even know he was looking for, his future.

This was a wonderful book willing with mysterious characters who were brought to life as the audio-book unfolded.

3.5 enchanted STARS

This book is for you if… modern fairytales appeal to you in their slow burn and steamy flirting character. Not overly sappy, this audiobook is a lovely companion for daily tasks and errands.

⤐ Overall.
The title of this collection says it all: Fairytales. Fairytales indeed but not over the top. All of the short novels were sweet and enchanting, with just the right amount of sappy. You will meet a mermaid, a kitchen witch and a bee-whisperer, all of them finally meeting their HEA. I loved the author's attention to details that added to the overall dreamy atmosphere of the book. Well rounded.

Characters. This aspect is the one that let me down the most and tempered with my reading experience a lot. Usually, fairytales have a bunch of diverse characters with multi-faceted, interesting motives. During book two, I had the suspicion substituting the names of the hero and heroine of each story with any of the other stories would feel like reading the same thing all over again with a different plot. They were so similar and indistinguishable.

World(-building). Surprisingly, I fell into step with the story quite quickly. It took close to no time to see the town of Chancellor with its many old houses, the lake, the grove and the water mill in my mind.

The arch of suspense. What you would expect from fairytales: rushed by normal standards, but just right for fairytales.

Magical Series

I loved each of the books in this series. The town of Chancellor is charming and inviting. A place that could easily be called home. I loved the townspeople and their meddlesome but loving ways. Each story follows a couple and their journey to finding love. Their tales were sweet, heartwarming and fun. If you love bit size stories with a bit of magic then I think you might enjoy these.

Magical, romantic stories, beautifully narrated.

My review is actually for the audiobook of this collection, published under the name of Melanie Karsak.

The narration is excellent. Easy to listen to, very different voices for each character. I found the children’s voices slightly weird (in The Glass Mermaid), but other than that it was spot on.

The Glass Mermaid:

This was a beautiful story, which I thought was going to be horribly, horribly sad, but luckily turned out not to be. It’s about two people who have lost everything finding one another.

The Cupcake Witch:

This one was good fun, though slightly saddened by both main characters having recently lost their mothers to cancer. But lots to like, discovery of magical powers, falling in love, overcoming difficulties, bringing a family together.

The Bee Charmer:

This story luckily has no one dying or recently dead of cancer in it, or only peripherally. For this reason alone, it has a more cheerful, settled tone than the previous two. I loved the idea of a “fairy godfather” who communicates with bees. A lovely, charming little romance.

Overall, this is a fun set of magical, romantic short stories, beautifully narrated, and rather whimsical.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
