What if Elizabeth Macarthur – wife of the notorious John Macarthur, wool baron in early Sydney – had written a shockingly frank secret memoir? In her introduction Kate Grenville tells, tongue firmly in cheek, of discovering a long-hidden box containing that memoir. What follows is a playful dance of possibilities between the real and the invented. Grenville's Elizabeth Macarthur is a passionate woman managing her complicated life-marriage to a ruthless bully, the impulses of her own heart and the search for power in a society that gave her none - with spirit, cunning and sly wit.

Story
In the year 2000, in the closest election in American history, Alice Blackwell's husband becomes President of the United States. Their time in the White House proves to be heady, tumultuous and controversial. In Alice Blackwell, Curtis Sittenfeld has created her most dynamic and complex heroine yet. American Wife is not a novel about politics. It is a gorgeously written novel that weaves race, class, fate and wealth into a brilliant tapestry. It is a novel in which the unexpected becomes inevitable and the pleasures and pain of intimacy and love are laid bare.

Daphne du Maurier's The Scapegoat is a classic tale of stolen identity. As dark as it is witty, it introduces listeners to the gloomy and despondent character of John the Englishman. When by chance, John comes face to face with his French doppelgänger, Jean, his bewilderment is quickly replaced with envy. Realising that Jean is in possession of everything he lacks but has always desired, he assumes the identity of his look-a-like, leaving his old, tedious life behind.

Publisher's Summary
Bringing 16th century Languedoc vividly to life, Kate Mosse's The Burning Chambers is a gripping story of love and betrayal, mysteries and secrets; of war and adventure, conspiracies and divided loyalties....
Carcassonne, 1562: 19-year-old Minou Joubert receives an anonymous letter at her father’s bookshop. Sealed with a distinctive family crest, it contains just five words: "She Knows That You Live". But before Minou can decipher the mysterious message, a chance encounter with a young Huguenot convert, Piet Reydon, changes her destiny forever. For Piet has a dangerous mission of his own, and he will need Minou’s help if he is to get out of La Cité alive.
Toulouse: As the religious divide deepens in the Midi, and old friends become enemies, Minou and Piet both find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as sectarian tensions ignite across the city, the battle lines are drawn in blood and the conspiracy darkens further. Meanwhile, as a long-hidden document threatens to resurface, the mistress of Puivert is obsessed with uncovering its secret and strengthening her power....

A special time and a special place
Another wonderful book by Kate Moss. Her words and the narrator recreate the turbulent times of the Huguenot /Catholic turmoil through so many characters, the innocence of Minnu and her siblings, the commitment of Piet to his cause and to his Lady of the Mists while the duplicity and hypocrisy of those who hold office in the Church is revealed in so many ways. I loved the beginning and the epilogue and look foreword to the next book and another country and how they link up. The Languedoc area especially Carcasson and Toulouse were crucial to the Cathars before the time of the Huguenots, must be something special in the air. This book recreates these atmosphere so well one can almost smell the land.

Too similar to Labyrinth
This was a bit too much like the Labyrinth for my tastes. Same names, same location, same themes (religious strife, hidden secret, boy meets girl, abuses of power, etc). Also, you know from the outset that most of the main characters must survive in order to continue the story into more modern times which takes away some of the suspense.
What happened to Blanche de la Bruyère at the end of the book seemed really out of character and inserted to kill a promising plot line rather than adding to the story. The whole ending is a bit far fetched and moves at a much greater pace than the rest of the book.
If you like historical fiction it's an enjoyable read but the story doesn't feel new.

Gripping from page one.
As with other novels by Kate Mosse I was hooked from the first page. It was beautifully read and the story romped along with more than enough twists and turns to keep me happy. If there is any criticism, and I am looking hard to find any, is that the last couple of chapters did seem to be slightly rushed, but maybe that was just my reluctance to leave the characters that had been expertly woven upon since the first mention of their names, as with her previous novels her description of place and surroundings were painted so vividly that you felt that you were stood right next to the characters, being able to see and smell exactly what they were. I was sorry to have finished this book and my main complaint is that I have to wait 2 years to be transported back in time to find out what happens next. By the time book 2 is out I shall have listened to Burning chambers again and again and as with other great novels each time I do listen I shall find fresh details that I missed first time around.
The burning Chambers is a brilliant novel, buy it, sit back and enjoy !

Enjoyable
Have read all her books to date and have enjoyed them all although they are quite lengthy. They all take place in the Midi in France. Quite gory as to what was done in the name of religion all over Europe in the 16th century. There are lots of coincidences which tie the plot together. Apparently there is another book coming out in 2020 which looks like it is going to be a sequel. A good read (listen). The narrator was excellent and did not overplay the different characters and accents.

Too many characters doing nothing in particular
The rate at which characters are introduced in this book was confusing for me. I found the story line fragmented because of the different locations and myriad of characters that lacked development. I found it difficult to attach a purpose to each character and follow whether they were good or bad from chapter to chapter.
I am almost at the end of the book now and even as I appear to approach its climax the storyline is wanting. I will probably return this.
The narrator has a very soothing voice and is typically the type of tone I enjoy listening to.
