Publisher's Summary

The Romans have long since departed, and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But at last the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased.

The Buried Giant begins as a couple, Axl and Beatrice, set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen for years. They expect to face many hazards - some strange and otherworldly - but they cannot yet foresee how their journey will reveal to them dark and forgotten corners of their love for one another.

Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro's first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and and war.

Profound and wonderful

A great book read by an awe-inspiring reader. Take my advice: know as little about it as you can in advance and allow it to unfold to you. Read no reviews. Just listen to the book.

forgetting combined with epic dragon legend

Like poetry and legendary tales that get lost in the mists of time.
The book moves slowly like the elder couple at its core... but when i relaxed into the journey i found it enthrawling.
The book provides the experience of discoving forgetting first hand with the characters. mistrust, leaps of faith, love that lasts beyond memory, things you wish to forget, the things you long to remember.

A very clever writing style

Fascinating story; nothing like I was expecting. The author throws you into situations where you don't know what's happening, mirroring the lack of knowledge of the characters.
Very interesting.

Interesting, not enhanced via audio

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not necessarily- I ended up needing to buy the book to really 'get' it. While the audiobook was fine, it was not the best medium to enjoy this particular book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Axl was my favourite character, because he had a wonderful depth of character, yet an admirable dedication to his wife.

Did David Horovitch do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Yes, he did, yet I still needed the written print in this instance to actually enjoy the book. His technique involved differentiating the accents.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Do our memories define us, or do they restrict and condemn us?

Any additional comments?

I greatly enjoyed the book itself, but for me personally the audiobook was not the way to enjoy it, through no fault of the audiobook itself

Beautiful dialogue and story rendered perfectly

A world as lives in epic poetry, where the supernatural is otherly yet still of nature. The story unfolds with similar precision to the diction of the speakers

Hypnotic

This book is just wonderful. One needs to pretend you are being read a fairytale and let it seep into your soul. Let go of any expectations and allowed the words wash over you. Brilliant narration.

Intriguing and different

Endearing characters are brought to life in a wonderful performance by David Horovitch. The story is intriguing and has stories within stories. I found the narrative rich and quaint. Events come together in an uncomplicated way, even though I could not predict how the story would end. Plenty to contemplate when finished. A beautiful read.

Ishiguro’s storytelling is phenomenal. He’s a true master of his art. Very well narrated also.

Fantastic performance, but obscure book

Really well narrated, but i found the story really obscure and difficult to relate to.
