Publisher's Summary

They were orphans, Chris and Saul - raised in a Philadelphia school for boys, bonded by friendship, and devoted to a mysterious man called Eliot.

He visited them and brought them candy.

He treated them like sons.

He trained them to be assassins.

Now he is trying desperately to have them killed.

Spanning the globe, here is an astonishing novel of fierce loyalty and violent betrayal, of murders planned and coolly executed, of revenge bitterly, urgently desired.

Great book, choppy reading

I'm a big fan or Morrell and I loved this book, but the production on this audio version is pretty sub-par. The narrator's voice goes really fast, as if the speed on the tape was increased. This makes it difficult to understand some of the words and the listener can end up confused on some character and plot points simply because it goes too fast to process.

Strong story, a tad long

Worth a credit. Warning: the book is more than 20 years old and feels a bit dated.

I prefer single readers to casts, but the story itself is strong and held my attention most of the way. I did feel, however, that it began to grow a bit predictable and I was ready for the story to wind up about 45 minutes before it actually did.

I did not find the reading too clipped or fast. I'll read more Morrell after this one.

Good novel with bad narration

BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE, Book 1 in David Morrell's Mortalis espionage series, was first released in 1984 and set at that time. It is a 5 star novel ruined by Morrell's own horrid narration. David Morrell is a giant of the mystery/thriller genre. I believe I'll listen to his First Blood soon. That is his 1972 first novel that introduced John Rambo who was made famous by the Rambo movies. Eric G. Dove narrates the First Blood/Rambo series so I can be confident of first rate narration.

I seldom reduce overall ratings based on bad narration but in this case the narration is so horrid that a major down rating is justified.

An amazing novel ruined by narration

I got a part way through this book, and I had to stop. The narration is some of the worst I've heard. It's a bunch of different narrators, chopped up and an attempt to blend them together. Both were failures. I chose to purchase this book and just read it, and thank goodness I did. I LOVE THE STORY! I love the book. But this narration is an embarrassment and should not be saddled with such an amazing story. Skip the audio, just read the book.

I loved this when I read it, loved it as an audible.

This series of books needs to be a movie. Takes place in the 80’s but is still relevant now.

I read

This several years ago. The reading is terrible. I like one reader, not a full cast. Really messed up my experience..

Multiple voices got on my nerves

I like some of Morrell's other works so I thought I would give this one a shot. I HATED the multiple voices on this recording.

Narration Poor

Narration was stilted and without flow. Audio was too fast at times and this made it hard for easy listening. Listen to the sample first!!
