About this listen

Some truths are too terrible to speak, and too dangerous to hide.

London, 1955. Nurse Helen Brent has spent twenty-six years believing she’ll never find love. Then she meets her new patient, David Edevane. Despite a tragic upbringing, David is kind and stable, and their whirlwind romance quickly leads to marriage and pregnancy. But Helen’s world collapses when she uncovers a dreadful secret, and she will carry the consequences of her silence for the rest of her days…

Present day. Archaeologist Quinn Allenby has seen countless ancient remains, but the tiny baby buried with tender care in a London garden affects her deeply. When she touches the pewter brooch left with the body, Quinn is drawn into a devastating mystery. But as Helen’s tragedy unfolds, Quinn’s family begins to fracture, and she discovers that some wounds run deeper than time itself. Can she confront the growing threat within her own bloodline before history repeats itself in the most devastating way possible?

A heartbreaking story of forbidden love, family secrets, and the dangerous power of blood ties, perfect for fans of Diana Gabaldon, Susanna Kearsley, and Barbara Erskine.

this one is awful in that it's about a poor baby and how untruths can haunt the innocent.. also Quin's sister is an horrid piece of work. but her ending to this tale is unnecessary.
And Irina I know you feel the need to tie up all the loose ends but I do not agree with the epilogue.. that is not the thinking of a 5 year old.. 5yos are short sighted and narcissistic.. unable to think further than tomorrow

I am torn by this one

It was with thanks to Dr Stuart McBride whom I later encountered at Crown Street Hospital in Sydney that many pregnant women were spared from birthing deformed babies. For a number of years women had been prescribed Thalidomide to prevent morning sickness. I first heard about that drug when I started working as a doctors receptionist and had been told to search the drawers for any samples of that drug. It was being sold as Distival. There was one tablet missing but fortunately one of the doctors had prescribed it for his ninety year old wife who wasn’t pregnant!
Oh the memories this story resurrected from a time when many afflicted children attended school.
Family life moved on during this episode and not all of it was peaceful. I look forward to listening to the next book in this series.

Thalidomide came to my mind as soon as I had the time frame.
