From the best-selling author and creator of the hit Netflix drama The Stranger.

Thirty years ago, a child was found in the New Jersey backwoods.

He had been living a feral existence, with no memory of how he got there or even who he is. Everyone just calls him Wilde.

Now a former soldier and security expert, he lives off the grid, shunned by the community - until they need him.

A child has gone missing. With her family suspecting she’s just playing a disappearing game, nobody seems concerned except for criminal attorney Hester Crimstein. She contacts Wilde, asking him to use his unique skills to find the girl.

But even he can find no trace of her. One day passes, then a second, then a third.

On the fourth, a human finger shows up in the mail.

And now Wilde knows this is no game. It’s a race against time to save the girl’s life - and expose the town’s dark trove of secrets....

Love Harlan Coben

I’ve always loved his books and this one comes up trumps. I’m so sorry it’s finished perhaps I read it again. The narrator was terrific too. Hope Harlan is writing another.

Disappointing.

A disappointing novel with too many improbable sub plots and irritating witticisms. Not up to Harlan Coben’s usual standards. I would not recommend this book to Coben fans.

Engaging narrative

A great book full of twists and turns. Especially loved the way in which Steven Weber was able to bring each character to life with distinct voices. Th narration was what made it a winner for me.

Good storyline

This had a good storyline but I found the narrator to be a bit grating at times. The way he spoke when using Hester’s voice was particularly annoying - sort of a stereotypical elderly Jewish person.

Nice twist!

I enjoyed Harlan’s previous book The Stranger so much it was natural to read this one too. By the second chapter I was hooked. It is well written, keeps you guessing & thoroughly entertained.

one dimensional

the narrator was the best bit about the audiobook. the story was fit for an action movie on Netflix. I did not like the writing style and the characters had no depth. but for action crime fans it's probably ok.

Unexpected

I’d put off listening, but had this in my wish list for ages. It’s not what I expected, but I loved it. A more emotionally driven story of the personalities of the characters, with a few unexpected twists. I hope we see more of Hester - what a character!

Shouty

This felt like listening to 10 hours of loud Americans shouting at each other. In the story, the "Boy from the Woods" has now grown up and qualified as a Private Investigator. He teams up with lawyer Hester Crimsteen and together they investigate. The story involves school bullying, missing teenagers, a rich TV mogul, and a presidential candidate. The story did have action all the way through and there were a few good twists, particularly towards the end. I just wanted it to be over.

Some good bits but mainly rather dull.

This isn’t great from Harlan Coben. Some good ideas but an awful lot of tedious padding. Too violent and macho for me it seriously stretches credulity and the ending is extremely trite. Many of the characters are unpleasant and irritating. I prefer his psychological thrillers.

Master story teller

Loved this book. Coben is a master story teller - one of the very best, and this story is a hit. Really like the characters and can definitely see them making more appearances.

Back on form

I’ve read and now listened to almost all of Harlan Coben’s work and must admit the past few years have been a bit hit and miss for me but I really enjoyed this one. And what’s not to like about Steven Weber?!

Another page turner from the Master mystery writer

Maybe not Harlan Coven's best but certainly a great read which kept you guessing right to the end. maybe too much unnecessary background and then the end slightly rushed. but very enjoyable read - now hopefully not too long a wait for the next book🤞

Lockdown Listening

I've long been a fan of Harlan Coben's books and this does not disappoint ... food plot , some surprises , this is the first book I've listened to and in these socially distant times hearing someone else's voice has been a bonus. 10/10

Good not great

Firstly, let me say that I love HarlanCoben novels. This one was interesting, quite convoluted but the characters lacked depth and were mostly unlikeable, even the ‘nice’ characters didn’t draw me in. That said worth a listen.

Enjoyable listen but forgetable

Harlan Coben is a fantastic writer, one of the best as posing a dilemma and then taking you through the journey. This story whilst enjoyable to to listen to or read struck me as lazy or completed in a rush. It had a big scope to focus on, a guy wanting to be President of the USA but used a really skirted the edges of what is could have, should have been. The usual pace of writing, the development of strong characters, who I liked but let them down with a bit of a weak premise to move forward with, which I think is my gripe. It may translate well to TV where we can suspend belief a little more at times. Great performance from Steven Weber.
