Publisher's Summary

After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times best-selling author Maureen Johnson.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls - the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive.

Take the dive

This series was well worth it, I loved how the story was told over 4 books.
I’m now waiting for the next series, during and post college and with England thrown in.
Loved the dynamics of all the friends.
If your thinking of ready these, don’t think….do!!

Disappointing

I loved the first three books in this series but was really disappointed by this one. It felt as though the author had run out of original ideas. I found the plot, such as it was, a cliché trope and was unable to suspend disbelief when it was revealed who'd dunnit and why. The protagonist makes a lot of stupid decisions putting herself and her friends in danger. She survives a midnight chase where she was being shot at by jumping into an icy lake after having the wherewithal to somehow hide a crucial piece of evidence. And the repetitive descriptions of her panic attacks and inability to communicate with her boyfriend have become tiresome padding. Not even Kate Rudd, who is a brilliant narrator, can save this book from its lack of original storyline.
