Publisher's Summary

A global movement guided by love.

Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies.

The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world - for us all.

A real eye opener

I have been turned off books about body love because they seem too wishy-washy to me - I love me, I’m beautiful, blah blah blah. This was nothing at all like that. It shows how negative beliefs about our bodies are part of the social structures that we live in but it also tells us how we can start to effect positive change. I loved the way this book was not focused on weight but on bodies generally. It has really enlightened me to way I think about difference and how I can be more inclusive toward others.

Revolutionarily wonderful. But editors, take note!

I love this book and love hearing Sonya read her work, but to the producers of this audiobook --- you guys need to review this product for moments that needs editing. It seems like no one even listened to it before releasing it to the world. Every stumble over words is still in there and seems completely unedited. Otherwise, this is a must read/listen for everyone!!!!!

The story was lovely. The narration needs to be edited.

This is not edited for some unknown reason. The author is the narrator and reads her story beautifully but it could use some editing - some lines are repeated and there are many pauses. It may not seem like a big deal to some but it was distracting. Still, it was a great book ✊🏽

Love the One You're With (That's You!)

There’re so many great literary couples to love. Ygritte and Jon Snow! Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist! Eleanor and Park! Undeniably memorable pairs, all of them. But my personal favorite has to be Sonya Renee Taylor and… Sonya Renee Taylor! While my Midwestern sensibilities have always strongly favored self-criticism to an unhealthy degree, Sonya’s treatise on radical self-love is quickly winning me over. More than mere self-acceptance, which may be closer to resignation in the ways that really matter, Sonya advocates for a radical love for your body (and self) with a magnetic enthusiasm that reveals a startling truth: you’re better able to love others when you already love yourself.

Not worth it

If you want a good body positivity book check out body positive power by Megan Jayne crabbe. This one was dry, chaotic and with no other point than the main title. Do not recommend.

Listen to this!

I want to read this book over and over. It is absolutely amazing. Here are my takeaways: We cannot change the world without first changing ourselves. We cannot create a world of love and acceptance without loving and accepting ourselves. Our self includes our body. Sonya Renee Taylor is poignant and to the point. She gives you the whats, whys, and hows, but it's up to each of us to sort through our dislike, shame, and dissociate we have with our bodies. Despite the damage our capitalist society has wrought on each of us in distinct ways, it is up to each of us to mend and restore the relationship with our body. Radical self love is not only possible, it's necessary and urgent. Read this.

Alright

I liked most of the concepts in this book but I found the performance to be a bit annoying. Would have preferred to read hard copy instead of listening to the audiobook. Also some of the concepts felt so far fetched that they really didn't bite. Maybe if I listened to this a second time I'd be able to enjoy the content more but honestly I was just waiting for the book to end. I'm not against the content at all I think her idea of radical self love is so important and pretty well explained! I just didn't enjoy the audiobook that much.

Absolutely EXCELLENT and urgently needed!

Sonya Renee Taylor’s words are exactly what the world needs right now. Her message of radical self love and the deeply compassionate, radically liberated voice with which she delivers it create stunning work. Get yourself a copy, and then get a copy for everyone you love.

Awe-inspiring!

This book was brilliantly written and narrated. I could not stop listening. The concepts, intelligent critiques, and valuable tools make this both inspiring and incredibly practical. I have been on a radical self love journey for years, but this book just really nailed every aspect of a process so desperately needed for not only myself but society at large. Thank you thank you thank you Sonya Renee Taylor!

Not everyone's cup of tea...

Sonya has a beautiful message, but she intertwines it with obvious political opinions. The message is awesome, but I kept feeling like she was trying to steer my political views rather than my body image views. I love all people of all colors, genders, and walks of life. I don't need Sonya to chastise me into feeling that way, but sometimes I did feel like that was her purpose. I think if you want to write a book about self-love, then you really must write a book for all people, including those who may not have the same political views as you. If you want to write a book about liberal view and why we should think that way, then the title and narrative should convey this instead.

Essential healing from eloquent lips

I've been reading and using the TBINAA blog for well over a year now, and I thought this book would be a natural extension to the messages online. This book is incredible, I've learned so much that has helped heal my heart, and I highly recommend it for everyone (ie, not just for people who want to feel better about themselves, or not just for aspiring activists, or not just for marginalised people... EVERYBODY should read this!) Plus, what I especially love about this recording is the little errors in narration that have been left in. I've never heard this in any of the audiobooks I've listened to, and they are a light-hearted but powerful reminder that perfect doesn't mean perfection. Will definitely recommend to friends, and definitely listen to again. Thank you Sonya.

Good, but you need to be in the right headspace...

This book reminds me of the film Schindler's List - you should read it, but you won't necessarily enjoy it, and you might need to follow it with Disney. It is challenging, which isn't a bad thing in itself. However, I would say that if you are dealing with any body related trauma (and some might say ALL trauma is body related) you may find this book triggering. In addition, this book is read by the author, who is, of course, and quite rightly, very passionate. On occasion (and probably because I was being triggered) this felt a little too full on. I would advise approaching with a little caution, depending on where you are.
