Publisher's Summary

Gavin Guile is dying. He'd thought he had five years left - now he's got less than one. With 50,000 refugees, a bastard son, and an ex-fiancée who may have learned his darkest secret, Gavin's got problems on every side.

As he loses control of his magic, all magic is running wild, threatening to destroy the Seven Satrapies. The old gods are being reborn. Their army of color wights is unstoppable, and the only salvation may be the brother whose freedom and life Gavin stole 16 years ago.

Critic Reviews

“Epic fantasy at its best . . . I was hooked in from the first page and couldn't put it down, even at the last. It is, quite frankly, superb.” ( Sci-Fi London)
“Weeks manages to ring new tunes on...old bells, letting a deep background slowly reveal its secrets and presenting his characters in a realistically flawed and human way.” ( Publishers Weekly)
“Weeks has written an epic fantasy unlike any of its contemporaries. It is a truly visionary and original work, and has set the bar high for others in its subgenre.” (graspingforthewind.com)

Excellent!

Whilst The Black Prism did and admirable job of setting the scene The Blinding Knife really opens this series up. A well structured story with excellent character development delivers a gripping narrative. I can't wait to listen to the next in the series.

Not sure about Kip

Good but maybe not as riveting as book 1. I don't really like Kip, but I love the world and the magic system - and Gavin and his story. There are enough twists and turns to keep one interested and I will keep on with the series.

Pretty epic

Wish the reader was a little more versatile, and I don’t think he embodies the intended emotion or context half the time. But I don’t think the story suffers at all. My imagination was active the entire time he was reading which is what’s important. Very keen for the next book:)

Better second time around.

This series seems to be better the second time around. Because I know when it gets bogged down with the long drawn out battles, I can faze out knowing I won't miss any actual story line.
I am going to try book 3 fingers crossed that I can do the same with that one as there is a lot of repeating themes in that one.

The Magic, Mystery & Mayhem grows

Excellent sequel, the plot & characters continue to deepen. No clue where the story will go from here, anything can happen. A very unique magic system in it's technicality & completeness.

Young Adult Fiction trying to be otherwise

I have so many problems with this book and it’s predecessor The Black Prism, from the careless sexism to the blatant and protracted fat shaming, to the careless inconsistency of characters and their sole role in simply furthering the plot. I listened to this novel after listening to the first, simply to see if the author had reasons for the unlikeable, unrealistic characters - however I’m led to believe the author simply doesn’t know how to write well rounded characters that aren’t an inch deep. The magic system is, for lack of a better word ‘meh’, and is explained so poorly, especially considering how much time was spent in the first novel trying to do so. If you’ve ever read a decent novel by other authors in the fantasy genre, don’t waste your time with this.
