About this listen

Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path.

But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark.

Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing since a distant northern city fell to giants.

Unsuccessful in his robbery and lucky to escape with his life, Kinch now finds his fate entangled with Galva's. Common enemies and uncommon dangers force thief and knight on an epic journey where goblins hunger for human flesh, krakens hunt in dark waters, and honor is a luxury few can afford.

I rarely give top marks, but since I've listened to this book about 10 times, I guess it leaves me with no choice. Absolutely love it. In many respects it's everything we love about classic fantasy fiction, but it's all very original at the same time. One thing I will say - the author/narrator speaks quite fast, which suits the character perfectly, but he's so much easier to follow if you reduce the playback speed to 95%. I love tavern scenes in fantasy and there are plenty of these along the way. Fantastic system of magic. Awesome perspective on Goblins and there asymmetric politics and lifestyle. There's a brilliant passage via ship across the ocean and so much more. Plus, some genuinely chilling moments from an author who normally writes horror. If you love the fantasy genre, you'll love this one, no doubt.

The author was a great narrator. Excellent fresh story. Well worth the read. Do it

A really good book well read

A phenomenal, rich, unique read both very much like and yet vastly different from the authors previous work of Between Two Fires.

Bushman does it again.

I loved this book in patches. It's very funny, and the world building is great, but I find myself losing interest in the protagonist at critical points in the narrative. The narrator is good and I didn't have an issue with the accent or speed, but the story's flow didn't always match the criticality of the scenes. It's good enough that I'll try a few of the author's other books, but I'm not going back to this one.

Good but not great
