About this listen
A woman's midlife reinvention and a beach village of eccentric Aussies collide with stupendous results in this witty, razor-sharp and immensely enjoyable debut from author Catherine Greer.
Audrey Sweetman wakes up one morning next to her husband, excited for the promotion she's been working towards for years. But by nightfall, everything in her life has been upended.
She escapes to the seaside village of Whitehaven Bay, but her plan to hide is derailed by her meddlesome new neighbours. The Coffin Cheaters bikie gang. A cranky pensioner with a habit of naked swimming. Shez, the dubious 'CEO' of the holiday flats. A mouthy teen who's nothing but trouble. And a handsome yet elusive retiree, Dr Flood.
When Audrey learns she's facing financial disaster, the villagers help her launch the haphazard Bittersweet Biscuits. Targeting divorce parties for Sydney's elite, Audrey begins selling fortune cookies that tell the bitter truth.
With a little help from her unpredictable friends, Audrey just might be able to make the outlandish business work—if the law doesn't catch up with her first.

The perfect beach read
The Bittersweet Bakery Cafe by Catherine Greer
This was very much a bookstagram book; so many people on Instagram were getting ARCs, eating cookies and recommending it; I knew it had to go on my TBR pile. The Bittersweet Bakery Cafe is different to the books I usually read; there's no crime, no mystery, and no one dies. It's advertised as 'general fiction', but I would describe it as chick-lit.
At age 53, Audrey Sweetman's life spiralled into chaos literally overnight. All she wanted to do was hide away until things calmed down, so she got into her car and drove to the small seaside village of Whitehaven Bay, where she spent time with her mum while she was growing up. Arriving in the village offseason, she was taken in by an eccentric cast of characters, including her grumpy landlord, who likes to take a nude swim every morning, and a nonbinary emo/goth teen called Billie.
Encouraged by her newfound friends, Audrey takes a leap of faith and launches a whimsical cookie venture featuring fortune cookies filled with honest fortunes and her popular chip-chip hooray cookies -- the book includes the recipes -- I have the audiobook version and the recipes are supplied as a PDF download. If I could get some cookies delivered, that would be awesome.
The Bittersweet Bakery Cafe is about resilience, friendship, unexpected failures and successes. It's light, charming, and a perfect beach or holiday read. I seem to be working through every Australian/New Zealand book set in a small town :D
Thumbs up 👍

The Bitter Sweet Bakery Cafe by Catherine Greer was such a comforting and heartwarming read—I ended up binge listening to the whole book! Audrey, felt like a cherished friend, and I was completely drawn into her world. I couldn't help but wish I could sit down with her in her cozy kitchen, and soak in her warmth. Fabulous contemporary novel
I loved this book. A refreshing contemporary novel set in New South Wales Australia. A great mix of real people characters from the lovable kindhearted to bullies and ones challenged lacking confidence but willing to try new directions. Many middle aged women will understand or have endured these life experiences Audrey goes through. Betrayal, cheating or lies by partners or bosses, misogynistic attitudes, younger work colleagues ageist attitudes to middle aged women, being dismissed as lacking value because they haven’t had children. Audrey rises through her many challenges, takes risks, follows her dream despite the obstacles with the support of her new found eclectic group of friends. It is bitter sweet with disappointment, fun and humour, The similarity of the setting with Hyams beach was a prefect spot for most of the story to take place. It was easy to visualise. I am looking forward to Catherine Greer’s next novel.
