Story
She is an exceptionally successful writer whose obsessive readers hound her for every book. But the pressure is extreme. And it’s not just the pressure of finishing her next novel. Years ago when she was a child, Lucy’s little brother went missing, and he has never been found. Many people think Lucy was responsible for his disappearance. Lucy herself can’t bear to think about it. Writing a thriller a year is demanding, and Lucy depends on her husband, Dan, to take care of everything in her life. But Lucy finds herself in a real police drama when Dan goes missing.
Publisher's Summary
Peighton Claiborne's perfect world is built on perfectly crafted lies. When the sudden death of her husband destroys everything she worked so hard to create, Peighton finds herself struggling to cope.
As the police begin digging into the mysterious death, they uncover secrets her husband had spent years trying to keep buried. The people Peighton believed she could count on, and the ones she needs more than ever, begin to turn on her, leaving Peighton to pick up the remaining pieces of her life alone.
When a police officer assigned to her husband's case, Clay Nealson, takes a special interest in her, Peighton thinks they may finally uncover the truth she so desperately seeks. Together, Peighton and Clay search for answers. In a moment of weakness, she finds herself falling for a man she barely knows. But, when Peighton discovers Clay may have his own hidden motivations to finding out the truth of her husband's death, she is forced to realize the only person she can truly trust is herself.
As the world she once knew spirals around her, Peighton must uncover the truth about her husband, his secrets and his death, before it's too late. And, in an effort to protect those she loves, she must reveal a few secrets of her own - ones that threaten to destroy everything she worked for.

Exciting Mystery With A Twist
I was hooked right from the start of this emotional and exciting story. I couldn't wait to hear every new chapter. I requested a code for this book due to how much I enjoy listening to Scott Bennett. He is one of my very favorite voice artists. I especially love hearing his western story books. I now have a new author to add to my list of favorites after hearing this story. Kiersten Modglin has such a natural talent for reality in a book. Everything in this story seemed like real life. I could relate to almost everything except for the part about what happened to the character Drew. My favorite character is Petyton..the wonderful woman who showed love to everyone and especially to her son. A mother's love knows no bounds or limits and no matter what a child says or does can cause a mother to stop loving her child. The mystery in this book was so intriguing also. I really thought I had it all figured out just like Peyton. I was as shocked as she was to find out the truth. I know anyone who listens or reads this story will enjoy it so much. Thanks Scott for the audio code !!

Engaging story
This is an engaging story full of secrets, loss, suspense and fresh starts. The plot has plenty of twists, great romance and I really enjoyed the characters (especially Clay.) I loved the way the story kept you guessing as to what was really going on. Even though the story mainly revolves around a female character, I thought the male narrator did a great job. This is an enjoyable audiobook that I’m sure will keep you entertained

A Household of Cards
One of the questions this book asks is - Which holds more deception, a room full of politicians, or a household with a politician at its head? A second question is how many, and to what degree must sacrifices be made for a politician's image and career? The author does a wonderful job of teasing the audience with these central questions by using the life changing effects and aftermaths seen in the various characters' lives rather than stating them outright. The narrator does a superb job of lightening his voice and using emotional emphasis to great effect for the female parts rather than trying to produce a faux female voice. His slight drawl and suppression of it as well as his wide range allow for a great deal of distinction between characters. The book will have you off balance from beginning to end, as just when you think you have one puzzle solved, or at least partially understood, a new twist arises. Also since these characters are organic, the changes in their perspectives and lifestyles also make the ultimate truths more difficult to see. If you enjoy a book that will keep you guessing, I recommend this one.

Full of suspense
This book was filled with secrets and lies, lots of potential suspects and so many twists and turns. It kept me guessing all the way to the end. I couldn't decide who could be trusted and who couldn't be. It was a wild ride to say the least. The narrator did a great job bringing all the characters to life. the politician's secrets
Peighton's husband has just died, in what was ruled as an accident at home...he fell down the stairs and broke his neck. An open and shut case...right? However, the lead detective in the initial investigation, Clay Nealson, does not believe that Senator Claiborne's death was an accident and continues to investigate even after the case has been closed. Clay believes that someone has murdered the senator...and had also murdered his wife a few years ago. He begins a relationship with Peighton, initially, as a means to get info but then starts to develop feelings. Will anything come of that? Meanwhile, the investigation reveals lots of secrets...about the senator and the Claiborne couple. Wow, this was a fast paced thriller that leaves you saying 'I never would have thought...'. Mixed emotion about the ending but it was a great book and awesome narration.

Great use of suspense
This is my first experience with Kiersten Modglin and I wasn’t disappointed. I was offered a free review copy by the narrator, J. Scott Bennett, which did not sway my opinion in any way. Scott Bennett produces quality audio books and has an easy voice to listen to. He does a good job with both male and female parts. I liked the different twist this book had. The protagonist, Peighton comes home to find her husband dead and emergency vehicles everywhere. We’re left to ponder what happened to him throughout the book and are nearly to the end when it is confirmed how he died. On top of that, we encounter another murder and are left to wonder if the two deaths are related. There are several twists and turns in this story, including the secret the son is also hiding. Throughout the book, Peighton earns my sympathy. I wanted so badly for her to find happiness. The story flows well and is easy to follow.

Great performance, gripping story!
Have you listened to any of J. Scott Bennett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first, but I'm looking forward to listening to more. Excellent narrator, voiced all the different characters very well and with just the right amount of emotion and inflection. Not bad on the southern accent either!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yep, and I did!! Started it at 9:00 at night, and by 4:00 AM was finishing it up and wishing I could cram more sleep into my night!
Any additional comments?
Great story! The narration really added to the story and I think made it more interesting and certainly held my attention. ***This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.***

Multiple Plot Twists
Peighton's world comes crashing down when her beloved Senator husband has an "accident" on the stairs and is killed. Her son. Kyle blames her for his Dad's death and is pushing her away at a time when they should be caring for each other. There are other men in Peighton's life, Frank the bodyguard(for her husband) Clay, the cop, who is on the case (which he tells Peighton maybe suspicious,) but turns out he has a hidden agenda and Drew who may or may not have been a lover and the biological father to Kyle. MEANWHILE The hidden agenda, we find out is that Clay's wife was murdered by an on-line woman predator he, (Clay) met whilst in a football chatroom. It turns out that the Senator was also having an online "affair" with her. Clay wants to try to track down this woman and charge her with the murder of his wife and he suspects the Senators's murder also. MEANWHILE Peighton and Clay start up a cosy relationship. Frank has told them all now that the Senator is dead he no longer works for them and maybe moving to another city. There are several other plot twits running through all the other stories, including paternity, affairs, relationships and sexuality. The ending was very surprising J Scott Bennett's narration is excellent, he manages to make all the males voices individual and even his Peighton is pretty good.

Do you trust me?
On "a morning like so many others," Peighton leaves her Senator husband at home to go to the office where she organises his election campaign. But feeling uneasy when he doesn't answer the phone, she collects her teenaged daughter and returns back to their house. Senator Todd Claybourne is dead, found by the housekeeper, with a broken neck at the foot of the stars.
So far, so good. After that, it is all downhill. What should have been an exciting mystery turns into a jumbled record of family secrets, near incestuous relationships, an hysterical and always tearful main protagonist who is so introspective and egocentric she seems to miss the absolute obvious and a sequence of unlikely coincidences to push together a further romance. As a short story it might have been over-the-top incredible, silly but fine. As a novel ...
The saving grace is the excellent narration of J.Scott Bennett. Without his pleasantly modulated voice and skillfull interpretation of the character dialogue, this reader would have been unable to finish this muddle of misguided emotions with family secrets mascarrading as mysteries.
