Publisher's Summary

FC Barcelona are one of the most successful football clubs in the world. In the four years that Pep Guardiola was in charge they won 14 of a possible 19 trophies - a success rate never matched. However, what makes FC Barcelona unique is the winning culture that has delivered sustained success for much longer than the customary four-year cycle of an elite team.

Lying at the very heart of their success is how they deal with people and the care and attention given to the environment in which those people are nurtured: practices which are of equal relevance to all organisations trying to channel the activities of their talented individuals for the corporate good.

In The Barcelona Way, sports psychologist Damian Hughes reveals the key principles that have defined FC Barcelona’s success and shows how the DNA of a winning team can be successfully applied to any working environment, with dramatic results. They are: Big Picture, Arc of Change, Repetition, Cultural Architects and Authentic Leadership. These are the same principles that are adhered to in successful working environments across any industry.

Drawing on interviews with key architects of the culture, as well as his own extensive experience as a sports psychologist working with leading sports and business institutions, Damian Hughes provides unique insights into the crucial issues confronting the modern corporate environment and shows how the lessons learned at FC Barcelona can also be applied to develop your own winning culture.

Content versus narration

Outstanding content, wide reaching and referenced across the field allowing for a robust argument. Unfortunately the authors native accent, whilst charming, mitigated clarity. Idealy would have been narrated by (say) Derek Perkins or Colin Mace. Won't be purchasing anything else narrated by the author.

Good but dragged on.

I enjoyed the insight into the psyche of Pep Guardiola and his impact on an underachieving team. He created a team culture of equals very effectively. I think the book started to drag on and I started to lose interest, I skipped the last couple of chapters.

It’s actually really good!

I didn’t have high hopes for this as I’m not really interested in football. I’m more interested in the tactics and life lessons. I was impressed how many great learning meta Ford and methods were contained in the book. I don’t usually bother making many notes but I jotted down and googled loads of ideas to dig into in more depth. Well done and thanks.

Quality

A book that I would advise any coach to read. I had to read it twice and take notes.

It has developed me as a coach and given me a different way of understanding and thinking!

very engaging and informative book

I have read a number of management books but this extended case study is clear, accessible and understandable. and brings the success of fc Barcelona during the rein of pep guadiola into context.

Well read with a good conversational style. so much better than the usual posh men who generally get to do these books

A game of 2 books!

For me to book isn’t at all what I had imagined going into. It’s generally split into 2 side 1) A history of Barcelona’s most successful period and 2) How to be a leader in business.

The parts about Barcelona and Pep were enjoyable with stories about the change of manager and history of this. The management part however wasn’t for me and unless you’re the main part of a business I don’t think this will suit many. For me the 2 clash and don’t go together. It’s like one minute reading an biography and the other a self help book.

If you have no interest in business or leading a team in a company I would avoid this.

Great overview of what makes a winning culture

This book had a lot of promise and delivered on most of it. Each chapter was well planned and covered a unique block which stacked on top of the previous gave me a fantastic insight into what it takes to build a winning culture. the story, following the rise of Barcelona football club, is easy to progress with. the only part which let the book down was that some chapters felt light on depth and could have gone further into explaining the how's instead of just the why's.

Damian Delivers

A really good way of expressing the culture built at FC Barcelona. Intertwined with stories and examples of events that demonstrate how the culture is built, maintained and progressed. Excellent.

great book, even better if you are a soccer fan.

This is a well written book. It naturally focused on Barcelona so if helps if you are familiar with some of the names. Even if you don't follow football the principles are explained in other contexts as well. Highly recommended if you are interested in performing at work.
