Nedd Brockmann isn’t afraid to dream big. Fresh after running fifty marathons in fifty days, the twenty-three-year-old had an idea: a 4000-kilometre run across Australia, averaging 100 kilometres per day with the aim of completing it in the fastest known time of 43 days. He wasn’t chasing fame or public recognition. He just wanted to test his limits and raise a million dollars for homelessness in the process.

Story
The world's greatest bodybuilder. The world's highest paid movie star. The leader of the world's sixth largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke. But this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold's stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold's father hammered into him above all: be useful.

At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

worst book I have ever read
- By Anonymous User on 14-08-2020
Publisher's Summary
After years of adventuring around the globe – running, kayaking, hitchhiking, exploring – Beau Miles came back to his block in country Victoria. Staying put for the first time in years, Beau developed a new kind of lifestyle as the Backyard Adventurer. Whether it was walking 90km to work with no provisions, building a canoe paddle out of scavenged scrap, or running a disused railway line through properties, blackberry thickets, and past inquiring police officers, Beau has been finding ways to satisfy his adventurous spirit close to home.
This book is about conscious experimentation with adventure, making meaning and inspiration out of tins of beans, bits of rubbish, and elbow grease. Beau's backyard exploits are funny, authentic, insightful, and being copied all over the world.
YouTuber, new dad, and self-described oddball who needs to shower more, Beau is what happens when you cross Bear Grylls with Bush Tucker Man. With a PhD in outdoor education, a string of successful short films under his belt, and a boundless passion for discovery, Beau is the real deal.

Beau's YouTube channel in book form
If you're familiar with the author's YouTube channel read on otherwise, I highly recommend checking it out first!
Being a fan of Beau Miles on YouTube I jumped on this title eager for more of a good thing and it's great that Beau is narrating too.
This is mostly a retelling of largely the same adventures captured in videos. While there are some new details (such as a detailed gear list for the Kayak to work adventure), I thought more than once that showing is a more powerful medium for Beau's adventures.
Where the book worked for me was in getting to know more of the person and life story. While not a biography exactly, there's somewhat of a narrative on how Beau got to where he is now. It was definitely interesting and I would have enjoyed more of that.
Understanding more of Beau's background and experiences and how that shaped his perspective, thinking and life style was eye opening. It gave me something that YouTube hadn't, It helped me realize how different Beau is (from myself) and that I couldn't mimic or completely agree with everything he does or thinks.
In the end, I'm glad people like Beau exist to inspire us. My main take away is that everyone can and should go on adventures. Large or small, in far away places or in their backyard, the important thing is that it's the right fit for them.
P.S. Be prepared to hear about Beau's "Ute" a lot and other terms that might be unfamiliar to non Aussies

One of Beau Miles best friends has to be Mother Earth,
This Book means so much to as I go through life in my mid-twenties in the fast passes hustle culture of New York City, Beau’s writing made me feel as if was back home in the rural country home in which a grew up, while simultaneously showing me that my own backyard can be as vast and as adventure filled as any other place I could fly to. I’ve read this at least 5 times by now and still not sick of it
I’ve been a longtime fan of Beau Miles for years and when I saw he was in the works of writing his first book I knew it’d be good. What I wasn’t prepared for was just how good it would be.
Never before have I enjoyed a book so much that I buy it as an audiobook just so I can listen to it whilst I walk, run, work or even chop wood. Having Beau in my ear telling me of his insightful and refreshing views on the world and his adventures is like having your best friend with you all day. I highly recommend this book and if you haven’t already, check out his videos on YouTube.

An Aussie legend
Brilliant story from a good human “bean” an epic father, devoted husband and partially Feral modern day man.
Well done mate.

Real adventures told with wit and intelligence
An amazing biography! Witty, hilarious, exciting, interesting and profound. Beau is a great story teller and he encapsulates all he is and does wonderfully in this book. Inspiring and encouraging too to the inner explorer in all of us!
