Publisher's Summary

"The Apology of Socrates" is one of the earliest existing documents of Greek philosophy - everything earlier was lost and is known only through quoted fragments in later works, like those of Plato himself. Rightly so, the Apology is still, all by itself, an excellent introduction to Western philosophy and traditionally the first complete text read in the formal study of Classical Greek. Although the meaning has changed through time, the Greek word apología simply and precisely meant a defense, or a defense speech. At the trial for his life in 399 BC, Socrates astonished his listeners by appearing, despite his vigorous "Defense Speech", to deliberately get himself found guilty and condemned to death. Plato, who's presence at the trial is mentioned twice in the Apology, provides us with the only witnessed recording of the trial proceedings and the historic "Apology of Socrates".

Hard to add or subtract from That!

Well, I finally looked far enough 'back' or 'in' to get some Plato and Socrates into me. This was a joy and an enlightenment. A tasty hour that I will revisit many times.

Wanted: Translator...

Difficult read, but relevant to independent thinkers of which we are woefully lacking.

I see politicians are still murdering critics from 2500 years ago to the present.

"Fuck the media;

Fuck drone strikes;

Fuck war;
Fuck ignoring of the poor;
Fuck the left;
Fuck the right;
Fuck the government." -- Benny Wills

True or false?
So-called "government" is always wrong because it's always violative of natural rights.

Perfect

Apology is amongst the most important philosophical texts ever written and this performance does an excellent job of working with the material. The narrator is fantastic and overall I’ve no complaints whatsoever.

Enlightening

There were so many profound insights and points made that I had to keep rewinding to take notes. Loved the narrator also. Great for such a serious topic!

Fantastic and relevant to today

The reality of cancel culture were even present in Athens. There and then, virtuous thought was dismissed by those who would profit from pushing their own narrative.

The narrator kept me captivated from the beginning and it is with sadness that I now realize that this is the only surviving direct work of Socrates, though recorded by Plato.

interesting

I knew very little about Socrates. this tells you how and why he died and what he believes. while I do not agree with his religion, he was truly a remarkable man. I wish I could have met him.

savage

the man is unwilling to beg and plead for life, the apology of Socrates is not in sniveling and sobbing but a well rounded and based defense of one of our wisest yet.

So fitting reflection of the current society!

A man’s confounded view of himself. A reflection of society where self righteous men projects to promote common good but in truth hides heart full of deception and envy. In the end, only God has perfect virtues and wisdom. Very good narration.
