A young girl wakes up in the night to hear voices coming from the hallway below her bedroom. She recognizes one of the voices as her father's, but the other person is not known to her. This leads Patricia to a secret underworld of smugglers, finding out that her father is one of the ring leaders after she finds a secret door leading to tunnels running from her house to Lymington Quay, and across the High Street to the Angel inn.
